Claire Fox (Fiona's sister)

Private Eye column on Claire Fox: A Fox in Farage’s coop: https://www.private-eye.co.uk/sections.php/hp-sauce?section_link=hp_sauce&issue=1495 (my bold)
Fox’s Revolutionary Communist Party (RCP) was one of the weirdest sects on the far left. Its leading cadres – Frank Furedi, Mick Hume, Brendan O’Neill and Fox herself – decided in 1997 there was no future in Leninism, since “the working class has no political existence”, and tried their luck with the media class instead.

To be fair to Farage, he has never endorsed bullying children, indeed he broke down when describing how his own children had been bullied. He may have won the Brexit referendum by demonising East European immigrants but he has never covered up their murder. And although he endorses Orbán, he has yet to act as propagandist for Balkan strongmen who have been convicted of crimes against humanity.

The question is not how Fox can bear to be in the same party as Farage, but how Farage can bear to be in the same party as her.

It’s a great shame that its medical columnist, Dr Phil Hammond, has such a conflict of interest (working at one of Dr Crawley’s CFS clinic), otherwise Private Eye might have been a useful ally against SMC, PACE, MUS, IAPT etc.

(For anyone unaware, here are Dr Hammond’s Private Eye articles on CFS and PACE, where he seems intent on using all his knowledge and experience to try to appear to be all things to all people: http://www.drphilhammond.com/blog/2016/12/20/private-eye/private-eye-medicine-balls-1432-updated/ and http://www.drphilhammond.com/blog/2016/12/20/private-eye/private-eye-medicine-balls-1433-updated/)

It’s also a great shame that those like George Monbiot and Alan Rusbridger who have previously criticised the SMC have shown no interest in its campaign against people with ME.

Yes it’s disappointing so many seem to have a blind spot on ME @Robert 1973
All thanks to Wessely's successful "dangerous militants" / ME "lobby" campaign. The best bullies always paint themselves as victims. Too many people bought it hook, line and sinker.

It will look horrible when people understand that it was always deflecting criticism from sick people begging for their lives and raising the alarm about a disastrous social experiment, but for now it's wildly successful and no one wants to touch us with a ten-foot pole.

Trying to not be party political just highlighting that CF is all over the BBC in the last few days.
I’ve just decompressed from listening to her do a full rant...luckily there was no mention of ME although her opponent had a dig about the rights of people with mental health issues ...which was skirted over I noticed ...to be honest if you have sound sensitivity ...just be prepared with earplugs before she comes starts talking.

Ugh I just saw this in the guardian today

[...] and Claire Fox, the ex-Brexit party MEP and former member of the Revolutionary Communist party, are both nominated for non-affiliated peerages

Not good for us considering her links to the SMC and public stance on PwME ☹️!

Edit: Fixed quotation problem

I am a strong supporter of free speech.

But my hard earned cynicism says that what at least some of the signatories really want is the right to lie and defame with impunity, which is not a right I support in any form.

Even the USA recognises that free speech is not an absolute right, that it has limits, albeit broad ones.

No surprise to see Dr Gerada congratulating her friend Claire Fox on her peerage and praising her “amazing work” and “honesty”. At least it wasn’t Fox congratulating Gerada or her husband.

From George Monbiot's article, linked in the tweet in this post

"Fiona Fox is also the director of the Science Media Centre, the public relations body set up by Baroness Susan Greenfield of the Royal Institution. It is funded, among others, by the pharmaceutical companies Astra Zeneca, Dupont and Pfizer. Fox has used the Science Media Centre to promote the views of industry and to launch fierce attacks against those who question them."

Wow. Didn't realise it was quite this bad.
If this is all public knowledge, how on Earth have SMC become the go-to source for all things science?!

Surely their input breaches BBC impartiality rules?

The political angle of the 'free speech' debate is outside the scope of this forum, so I won't comment.

I find it a great relief to have this forum as an online space that is not a free speech space, but is governed by rules members agree when they join, and implemented by mods with the committee's support and oversight.

Agreed. It does not mean your "right" to free speech trumps everyone else's human rights. It's a right conditional on not abusing the rights of others in the process. And the human rights of pwME have been so very much abused down the years.
