Michael Sharpe skewered by @JohntheJack on Twitter

He is confusing PIP (a UK benefit to help cope with disability when one needs lots of care and has mobility problems - and which can be an in-work benefit) with ESA (which is an out of work due to ill health benefit... meant to replace some of the lost income, it is pitifully little). If someone doesn't understand basics of the UK benefits system, how can they make pronouncements on their research relating to it?

Precisely. I do think it's poor for a doctor of his status, standing, influence & power over whether his patients receive such benefits, to not be aware that PIP has nothing whatsoever to do with whether someone is fit for work or not. Its about the extra financial burden of being ill/disabled & associated costs - due to care/mobility needs, in order to survive. You can be, for example, a quadraplegic (& therefore eligible for enhanced rate PIP in both elements), & yet not actually be in any way ill so with adjustments capable of some kinds of employment. Whereas you can be able to look after yourself, just about, & yet too ill to do anything else & therefore ineligible for PIP but unable to work.
It's not rocket science and the people with influence over whether people are able to access the support they need, jolly well ought to know the facts about all the different benefits relevant to their patients. That includes all doctors but ESPECIALLY those who believe in a BPS approach!

I am tempted to ask if MS has actually read the paper
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Yes, does the forum software save them? I might well want to go back to them in due course.
If they are deleted on Twitter (by the Tweeter) they will disappear from here as they are only embedded. It would be wise to save screenshots of the ones you feel are most important.

[Edit: would anyone like to take responsibility for saving screenshots of important Twitter threads and uploading them to S4ME – maybe as PDFs?]

The great irony in all this is that it's the PACE authors themselves - Michael Sharpe included - who give the appearance of not having read the Lancet paper. People who read their own papers tend to notice screaming errors such as 'improvement' thresholds that fall below the trial entry thresholds.

Oh dear. We need some superhuman member to log all these on to permanent media. I am hopeless at this. (OK I am lazy, but I have come to realise I cannot do anything about that.) Lots of gems here would be useful for my little notebook but I am distracted by having to sell my mother's flat and needing to persuade British Gas that their bill for £579 is for a period when she had long since left the premises, not to mention the electricity bill.... (Bloody excuses...)

OK, I am too old for this computer stuff. (Another excuse.)

Maybe we should keep pasting in the tweet material into the actual posts.

Perhaps we could set up a fundraising campaign for paying a S4ME trainee?

Edited: a fundraising campaign for @Keela Too
