Blog: The Science Bit by Brian Hughes

Patients generally don't believe that psychotherapy can cure ME/CFS (or that psychological factors cause the illness). That's not dualistic thinking. That's just disagreement about the role of psychotherapy and psychological factors in the illness.

Getting it Right: Addressing Myths about the 2021 NICE Guideline for ME/CFS

"Earlier this month, on World ME Awareness Day, I spoke at the Hope 4 ME & Fibro NI conference in Belfast. The event was hosted in the Stormont Parliament Buildings by Alliance Party MLA, Paula Bradshaw.

The title of my lecture was Getting it Right: Addressing Myths about the 2021 NICE Guideline for ME/CFS. I outlined eight pieces of misinformation regarding the new guideline (and about ME/CFS more generally) that are currently being pushed from certain quarters."

Just watched this. Superb @Brian Hughes. You have a way of seeing the wood despite the trees, hitting the nail on the head, cutting through the cr@p, and most importantly, getting it across in a way that is easily digestible to many audiences. There are so many strawman arguments and misdirections bandied about that are superficially very convincing to the unaware, which includes many professionals. Thankyou and well done, as always :).

This should be of interest to anyone affected by Long Covid and living in Canada.
Gosh this should be taken on board

how worrying but well done Brian

this is also great for any of us seeking concise explainers to those around for the common classics like ‘but CBT is a good add on anyway’ presumptions

I’m really pleased to start seeing factual language stating the level of honesty/responsibility hiding behind pretend earnestness (that they call often ‘good intentions’ but aren’t as they don’t intend to follow through on checking what they do doesn’t harm and taking that on board if it does).

And saying frankly there needs to be acknowledgement of the risk of an issue of patients being seen as ‘opportunities’ by some who are lobbying etc to sell certain supply-led services

Actually not just for those in Canada, anyone can provide comments. I don't know if they analyze them differently but it's open.

It has been shared on the long haulers sub-reddit and many sent comments. Everyone is appalled and baffled at what the hell is going on with medicine being so detached from reality.

It really is bizarre that the BPS fantasists can coexist in a world with genuine scholars like Brian Hughes who can point out their logical flaws and errors of scientific fact with such facility.

Thinking back to when I was a psychology undergraduate, getting on for fifty years ago, there was such possibilities, but now large chunks of medical science feel to have regressed in its understanding to the magical thinking of such as psychoanalysis of over a hundred years ago.
