Latest blog post from Bateman Horne Center:
Long COVID Treatment Trial, by Suzanne D. Vernon

https://batemanhornecenter.org/long-covid-treatment-trial/
(line breaks added)
Bateman Horne Center said:
This past summer, we completed an open-label, proof of concept trial using a combination of valacyclovir, the generic form of Valtrex, and celecoxib, the generic form of Celebrex to see if it improved symptoms in women sick with Long COVID. The combination of these drugs has two specific mechanisms of action that could inhibit herpesvirus reactivation and keep these viruses in a latent state or tamp down their replication. The valacyclovir works by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, reducing viral DNA synthesis and replication. Celecoxib, a COX-2 inhibitor, has anti-herpesvirus activity by downregulating COX-2 which herpesviruses turn on and up-regulate to help with viral replication.

We hypothesized that the combined usage of valacyclovir plus celecoxib would suppress tissue resident viruses and effectively manage the symptoms of Long COVID. The results were positive and showed statistically significant improvements in fatigue, pain, and symptoms of autonomic dysfunction and general well-being related in the treatment group compared to women in the control group receiving standard of care.

To confirm these encouraging results, we designed the gold standard of clinical trials – a randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial – to test whether two different daily doses of valacyclovir and celecoxib is a safe and effective treatment of symptoms in women sick with Long COVID. This trial will enroll up to 60 women who have Long COVID symptoms.

Since this is a randomized, double-blind, placebo control trial, the drug and placebo look identical and neither the participants nor BHC staff knows who is receiving drug or placebo. The participants are randomly assigned to either the treatment or placebo arm.

BHC needs to recruit and screen at least 600 women with Long COVID to enroll and randomized 60 women to achieve our target enrollment. This trial enrolls only women to minimize the differences introduced by sex in this relatively small study.

Study requires five in-person visits to the Bateman Horne Center (in Utah).

A reminiscence of Montoya's Valtrex trial umpteen years ago that showed stunning result in a proof-of-concept trial, only to quietly disappear from the scene when the double-blind trial failed. This is what I mean by long COVID research repeating what's been going on for the past 40 years in MECFS. So much for starting with clean slate to study post-viral illness in real time. I'm afraid this will go on ad infimum as long as they focus solely on viral/post-viral cause of MECFS.

New ECHO Recording Available to Watch Now!

Long COVID and Post-Viral Syndromes ECHO: Pediatric and Young Adults

What is an ECHO?

Developed by Dr. Sanjeev Arora in 2003 at The University of New Mexico, Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a collaborative medical education and care management model designed to provide best-practice specialty care to more people.

An ECHO is a forum for health care professionals to come together, creating a network of knowledge, through case-based lectures & didactics.

Bateman Horne Center and University of Utah Health ECHO teams host this excellent case-based learning series illuminating strategies for assessment and management of Long COVID (PASC), ME/CFS, and related comorbid conditions.

In this presentation Dr. Alba Azola and Dr. Melanie Hoppers discuss pediatric and young adult cases of Long COVID & ME/CFS.

  • Review recent epidemiological data on Long COVID in the young adult population
  • Describe the proposed pathophysiologic mechanism involved in Long COVID
  • Special considerations for assessment and management of LC in adolescents and young adults (AYA)
  • Case discussions

Note to community members:

We advise viewers to always speak with their medical care team prior to making any adjustments or changes to their current care regimen.
