If you're in the USA, and you have long term disability (LTD) insurance through your employer, your LTD coverage is most likely is covered by ERISA laws. Don't be fooled by the R in the acronym. ERISA covers much more than just retirement benefits.
Note: A lot of people in the USA are only covered by social security disability benefits (payments made by the federal government) and do not have any long term disability insurance coverage from their employer.
