Free nasal microbiome test/study at uBiome

Thanks for posting this - I signed up as I am constantly getting sick with colds (when nobody else around me gets them) even though I rarely leave the house. Also have chronic sinusitis.

I think that the 'free' part of this ran out.

Seems a little odd to be marketing a $90 test like this. If paying that much I'd want to have some reason to think that the test results are likely to be helpful.

That's why it was free (and has been at times in the past), as they're trying to 'help us learn about how your sniffles relate to your microbiome.'

After the discount they still want $19 for shipping - maybe UK only?
There was a statement saying "Domestic shipping is free both ways. International customers will need to pay shipping both ways."

I wonder if I will have to pay another $19.99 to send it back or if the $19.99 covers both ways.

The $19.99 is for them to ship the kit to you. You then have to pay to have it sent back to them with the samples.

Hmm. £35 for them to say I may have some interesting balance of strep and staph ? I'm not sure what my nose and throat microflora will actually tell me other than they are there?

I want to find out if I am missing L. Sakei as there is speculation that people who are missing this microbe in their sinuses have a higher tendency to get chronic sinusitis and infections.

Thanks for this info! Have just ordered the test kit. It is free after you put in the code, plus $19.99 shipping if you're in the UK which converted to about £15 when I ordered. Having had ongoing sinus infection throughout my illness, am looking forward to seeing if anything interesting shows up in the test!

Interesting ...I guess I'm just unsure what you actually get for the money. By this I mean...does it lead to a treatment or understanding/steps you can take to improve symptoms? Or is it more about donating your biome to science? It doesn't seem very clear from the website?

I can see if it is truly free you've got nothing to lose ( apart from wasted energy and cognitive time trying to work out what the results mean).

This is the reply I got to an email I sent yesterday:

While the Sniffle-ome won't "diagnose" it will provide you with results to better understand links between the microbiome, stuffy noses and sore throats.

Your results may reflect bacteria that is known to cause Sinusitis and therefore be a guide to steps one can take to avoid this.

Order your test and when you receive your results, if you have specific questions, we can ask our Science team to assist with interpretation.

I'm more interested in finding out what bacteria it is that I am missing compared to the general population, rather than what bacteria are present. I think that it is the missing bacteria that are going to be important.
