Crowdfunding: Trial By Error: [David Tuller] Reporting on ME, CFS, "medically unexplained symptoms," and related stuff, 2020

I'm confused about what the money raised will go towards. Does it fund @dave30th's position as an employee of UC Berkeley or does it fund Trial by Error as a project?

It seems to be the former according to the description on the crowdfunding page, but paying one's employer sounds strange. On the other hand, the About page on Berkeley's crowdfunding site mentions that it's about raising money for projects specifically.

Anyway, David's work is fantastic and I hope the fundraiser turns out OK despite the current situation.

Hi, yes--funding my job is the same as funding the project. My Berkeley job is to conduct the Trial By Error investigation, even though I publish it on the website of a Columbia colleague. I started it as a side project when I had other Berkeley responsibilities. When that funding ran out, I turned this into my funded Berkeley project. I could crowdfund indepedently, but this way it is a Berkeley project and I get my health benefits.

I think this has been asked other years, yet I can't remember the answer and perhaps the answer is different now.

Is there a place to send checks for those who can't for whatever reason donate on the internet?

Thank you so much David for your dedication and incredible work you do!

Yes, people can send checks made out to my center. Maybe I should add that information. If they send the checks to me directly but make them out to Center for Global Public Health, UC Berkeley, I can make sure they are delivered to the right office once we can move around again. Checks send to Berkeley might get lost in the system.

Well, it’s that time of year again, and it can’t be avoided–even in a pandemic. As many of you know, my ongoing investigation of bad research into ME, CFS, so-called “medically unexplained symptoms,” etc., conducted under the “Trial By Error” name on Virology Blog, is my project as a UC Berkeley public health academic researcher and journalist–even though Virology Blog itself is hosted by Columbia University microbiology professor Vincent Racaniello.
