Coronavirus: Advice from ME organisations

I want to speak directly to those suffering from ME/CFS, who are trying to cope at this moment, with the international COVID-19 pandemic response.

We have all been inundated by the usual and expected advisories that have conveyed the intended influence for otherwise healthy citizens to listen and appropriately deal with this crisis.

The fact is that we must contain this highly infectious and potentially lethal virus, at least in the short run, so that the healthcare system can respond effectively while not too many of us are afflicted at the same time. Hopefully over time, we will have a vaccine and/or we will have drugs that will mitigate the lethal effects of this virus upon the most vulnerable.

What strikes me as more evident from the perspective of ME/CFS however is a little different. For those who have been dealing with ME/CFS as a disease over time, social distancing with avoidance of infections has been a way of life. If anything, seeing the rest of the world trying to understand how to effectively achieve this way of life has been a déjà vu because for many, this has been a way of life since their diagnosis.

Perhaps, through this crisis, others will come to understand what having ME/CFS really means to one’s way of life and ultimately, we may find support to a better understanding of ME/CFS, to treatments, and possibly a cure.

We would suggest that all patients realize the potential threat of complicating one’s own health with this highly transmissible pathogen and to shelter in place with an enhanced commitment and sensitivity until this pandemic has resolved. The prudent course is to increase vigilance and outlast this current challenge and survive to fight another day.

Those clinicians and investigators who are supported by OMF, (although currently locked out of their institutions,) are still very actively engaged and continuing to work with every effort to better understand ME/CFS, to work toward a better day with improved treatments and hopefully a cure.

What Dr Tompkins says is all lovely, however, nowhere does he make a single little peep about the fact that the ME research needs to steam ahead, as folks need to have some help for their disease, they need time lines,(scientists seem able to give them for covid-19--or a range of time for a vaccine); ME patients need to know something is moving to help them, and not that all the attention has now turned elsewhere. I know about 10 people personally with this illness; and have known them for more than 10 years, and not a single one of them is any better, and they all continue to lie in silence suffering horribly.

Please ME doctors--and these words are to you: get some more fire under your seats. Yes, Covid 19 needs urgent instant attention, but can't you all learn from this urgency, and realise that lying in bed, confined and suffering, for decades is also an urgent matter.

There is a Q&A from the Bateman center on Covid-19 and ME

Also a collection of useful resources

Interested in comments about the "medical care considerations letter" in the resources. Sensible to take to the doctor/hospital or more likely to backfire?

As an aside, if you have a person in your life who still doesn't get it about handwashing, scroll down to the bottom of the resources page for the video "Seeing Germs". Or, if you prefer cartoons, try this one. Both are suitably gross. https://thespinoff.co.nz/covid-19/25-03-2020/the-side-eye-viruses-vs-everyone/

Thank you to @dave30th for putting the advices from ME Association’s Dr Charles Shepherd on Virology Blog:

Among many other useful things, I think it's helpful that CS makes a clear statement about drugs and supplements:

Finally, there are all kinds of misleading and sometimes even dangerous advice and fake news appearing on the internet claiming that high dose vitamins and supplements are an effective way in reducing the risk.

There is no scientific evidence that any drug, vitamin or supplement will reduce the risk of catching this infection or can be used to treat this infection.

A little black posting.

This maybe worth a separate section? But I don’t know how to achieve that.

But it’s probably worth considering your will? While here in uk the post office sell simple wills, the chance to put in place anything complicated has probably passed. So I have suggested to our challenged family that they put together a simple statement of their wishes and distribute it via email. At least it’s dated and likely to be from them. Wether, this would stand legal challenge is for later. But either way it’s a good stab for those who do not have anything in place in these exceptional times. Very clearly the traditional paper and uninvolved witnessed would be stronger should the worst occur. Delaying until one has fever or are incompetent would be undesirable. Plan, prepare and execute.

I have no legal experience, except to say a late parent did this statement of wish to clarify their existing will. As an executor it made my work a lot clearer and comforting that I was Certainly doing the right thing. The solicitor made no comment.
A major overhaul of probate legislation is on the agenda, as the government urgently looks to change requirements around witnessing wills in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Law Society and the Ministry of Justice are discussing ways to deformalise the signing of wills and to make it quicker to register for lasting powers of attorney. Currently a will must be signed by the testator and two independent witnesses.

Among the options on the table are an Australian-style approach which would give judges more flexibility when deciding what constitutes a will; a European-style system where testators could write wills by hand without witnesses; and a process where wills could be witnessed electronically. Current laws around the signing of wills have been in place since 1837, and it is unclear whether new legislation would be revoked once the coronavirus crisis is over.

When the digital signature act came into law in the early 2000s I found it interesting that they excluded wills from it (at the time I was using a will as an example of the need for long-term secure digital storage).

Alex Howard talks about some core principles for how best to navigate the current Coronavirus situation with fatigue related conditions.

Alex Howard is a psychologist who set up the Optimum Health Clinic. I haven't watched this but it shouldn't be considered a recommendation.

"Welcome to this week's Mindful Monday."
Thanks Everyday Alex.
Can we expect Trite Advice Tuesday, and Waffle Wednesday?

There's a bit in there where EA suggests that our over-active immune systems mean that 'maybe there's actually a layer of protection that might come with that.' (Cos that sounds like a really safe attitude to have.)

'Practice being in your body'.

Alex Howard is a psychologist
I don't think he's a qualified psychologist; he has a BSc (although to hear him talk.........).
He has also branched out (probably due to the OHC not doing very well financially) and has this site
Conscious Life
We’ve all seen how services such as Netflix and Spotify have revolutionized entertainment media. It’s now time to let Conscious Life revolutionize your inner life.
https://www.consciouslife.com/

so he might now be a called a lifestyle guru(?)

I vaguely remember Optimum Health Clinic being a thing but can't place it.
The Optimum Health Clinic (OHC) is one of the worlds leading clinics specialising in CFS, ME and Fibromyalgia. The OHC channel on Conscious 2 brings you life changing support for this complex group of illnesses from the comfort of your own home.
Bunch of woo peddlers.
