I think the introduction with information about historical cases was a good framing.
Yes, I think it was a good lead-in for people who've no experience or knowledge. Especially as it widened the frame beyond Britain as well as deepening it time-wise.
After that I got less and less sure, but still think it was a net positive in terms of awareness and credibility. It gave out a strong "proper scientists are working on this" vibe, and most people wouldn't have the background to know it sounded pretty confused.
