NICE Statement about graded exercise therapy in the context of COVID-19

Oops. If MEA are under an NDA, then they were a wee bit foolish to say that the statement was the result of a letter they sent if they can't then reveal what was said.
Just hope the NDA didn't also include revealing that they had even sent a letter!
I don't think the MEA would be under NDA. It would be Charles who would have to agree to the confidentiality agreement, rather than the MEA as an org.

Wessely hasnt personally but his wife, gp Clare Gerada was its president. Very powerful couple :-(

I vaguely recall reading that one of those prominent in developing the psychological approach re ME in the UK had trained as a psychiatric nurse; she had a relative who was a prominent MP --- so was able to influence Government policy.

Guess you can be lucky/unlucky re those who have influence.

Trudie Chalder was a psychiatric nurse, I think, before retraining as a CBT therapist. I have no idea whether she has any influential relatives.

"It wiped me out": Labour MP reveals shocking impact of "post-viral fatigue"

https://www.lbc.co.uk/radio/presenters/matt-frei/coronavirus-post-viral-fatigue-condition-brain-fog/

Not much new to this but:
After Matt pressing him, Mr Gwynne said that after an intensive day at the Home Affairs Select Committee during the week he was completely wiped out and "spent the whole day in bed" afterwards. He recommended listeners suffering with post-viral fatigue to "pace yourself and not overdo it, otherwise you're out of it for the rest of the week."
He concluded that "if the DWP doesn't recognise that a serious portion of the population might be going through this long covid viral fatigue, they're going to be penalising people who are unwell because they don't recognise a condition that is now very prevalent in the population."
Screams in DWP pushed for PACE strictly because of the savings.

NICE obviously deserves dirty looks as well. Some people are soon going to have to account for a whole lot of destruction they caused while being told they were causing that destruction and are still happily chugging along with the destruction because it's so much fun to think holistic and all that, as long as by holistic you mean strictly psychosomatic, obviously.

I hope he gets in on the APPG and pushes not only for change but an investigation of what the hell happened to derail things so badly, when rest and pacing literally was the standard advice before interlopers like Wessely came along.

Might as well just leave that here for no particular reason:

What has become apparent is that the "new" GET treatment is merely the old treatment for Neurasthenia via Effort Syndrome. You can cure yourself of effort syndrome if you really want to. Or so it was said.

What is surprising is that this was not made explicit.

@rvallee do you know where that 1988 MEAction campaign quote came from. @Lucibee and I have been looking for the original quote. It looks to have been quoted unreasonably by you know who.
Not sure where I got it. I think he was just referring to the fact sheet but in his own words. Searching for some quotes brings me to this thread: https://www.s4me.info/threads/who-w...eads-to-poor-outcome.5109/page-12#post-239413, but I think it only contains the second picture I included. I could not find the header for "the conventional view".

I'm sure it's actually on Wessely's website but not in searchable format. Someone really ought to archive his website as I'm sure it will be scrubbed clean in the near future.

Ah. I think I remember where I might have seen it... this was on one of the slides from the talk he gave in Palermo in 2008:

ME_leaflet_possibly.png
but it was unreferenced so could have come from literally anywhere. But it is a direct quote...
Many sufferers have been told that 'physical and mental exertion is to be avoided' (ME Action Campaign factsheet, 1988).

Got a different name innit.

(and obviously specialists/experts can therefore treat several related if not identical things as completely different - coz - they's got different names so they must be different.)

Does anybody else find it odd that, while looking official, this is 'merely' an article submitted to the BMJ by Ingrid Torjesen, a "freelance journalist specialising in health and health policy. She is a regular contributor to The BMJ and the Health Service Journal and is editor of The Advisor, a magazine for people working in smoking cessation services. In the past she has acted as news editor for The BMJ; opinion, features and news editors for the HSJ and features editor for Nursing Times. Staff posts include associate editor and news editor of GP newspaper, news editor of Pulse, and reporter at Australian Doctor, based in Sydney. She has a degree in Biological Sciences specialising in Genetics.". Source.

Have we missed the official announcement by NICE? And if we haven't, why haven't they made one?

It's also the same journalist who wrote the BMJ article Pressure Grows on Lancet to review "flawed" PACE trial
