Mirror: Tory minister demands comedian Ricky Gervais apologises for branding ME sufferers 'lazy' in offensive joke

Did the Worst Netflix Special of the Year Win the Golden Globe?

That “Ricky Gervais: Mortality” won for best comedy sends a message about the lack of respect given to stand-up.

This critic not a fan of Gervais! (Not about ME/CFS).

“But on Sunday, when the Golden Globe for best stand-up comedy on television went to Ricky Gervais for the second time in three years, the win shook me out of my indifference. That his dismal, meandering laundry list of jokes was even nominated was absurd. That it won, perverse.

Imagine if Steven Seagal received the Oscar for best actor — twice. Or if “The Alto Knights” won for best picture. Taste is subjective, of course, but how can anyone who watched more than a dozen stand-up specials this year think that Ricky Gervais’s pretentiously titled “Mortality” set the standard?”

I don't mind his humour generally (ME excepted), but this was far from his best and seemed phoned in. Mrs SNTG and I watched a few stand-up shows this year and the standout in our opinion was Nikki Glaser's similarly titled "Someday You'll Die" (trailer). It was 2024 though and she was hosting the awards show. But you have to say A+ for humour, delivery and A++ for effort (IYKYK).

the office was good but that wasn’t by any means just down to him the group of actors were excellent and of course Stephen Merchant

As a stand up meh. Others do the grumpy sarcastic middle aged brit bloke far far better not least the late Sean Lock and the still with us Jack Dee and Stuart Lee.

My first proper girlfriend in sixth form loved Ricky Gervais and I got dragged to two of his films. Not something I missed when we split up!

He's had a few good standup shows, and extras and the office are good, but by and large he's a smug unfunny bully who hides behind an 'I'm just kidding' persona to punch down - pwME and trans people being good examples of his targets there.
