My grandmother on my mother side suffered severe painful migraines and used to hide her medications under her mattress b/c family didn't want her taking higher doses, but she needed the higher dosages to manage. My history of migraine only occurred every 3-4 years and would last exactly 4 hours, preceded aura for 20 minutes followed by sick-headache. I never felt I needed pain meds, a sedative felt better and helped me fall asleep.
I've read that all scintillating scotomas are auras, but not all auras are scintillating scotomas. I think I experienced both.
