International: Science for ME social media posts

@Andy, with all that's going on with twitter have you considered making a mastodon account?

Just curious, please do not interpret my question as a request to do extra work!

Very grateful for all the work you do

Yes, we have considered it but frankly I have no desire to add another social media account to my workload, so currently it won't happen until either Twitter dies completely or the potential audience on Mastodon exceeds that of Twitter, and if it did then the Twitter account would be mothballed.

I’ve posted the Science for ME forum weekly news update on Mastodon each week for the last four or five weeks e.g. today

I boost ("retweet") @Tom Kindlon 's posts on Mastodon so I will add my thanks here, too!

I also do my own post of the Science for ME news once a week, usually on Mondays. (I'm often not online on Sunday) And then I pin it to my profile so it shows up first.

There's no algorithm on mastodon. You only see things in your home timeline if they are posted while you are online. Even if you are following a hashtag (eg, #MEcfs) you won't see any older posts unless you search for that hashtag. Unlike twitter, a post will never show up in your feed just because lots of other people liked it or boosted it.

Based on that I think that multiple posts, and multiple posting times, seems to be more important when you want to spread information.

Edited to add a link to my last #Science4ME news post:

@Trish kindly posts the news in brief each week. This means that external sites may use her (fab) avatar and render like this:

Appreciate this would be an extra step, but to promote externally, I wonder if it could be straightforward to post the news in brief from a generic account, using the S4ME logo for an avatar.

Note: Twitter doesn't do this, but Mastodon does — I don't think we would have technical control over this in terms of the URL we provide as a link in the post.

I presume Mastodon is looking at the linked post and using the <img> tag in that post's HTML, whereas Twitter is looking upstream to the site's main logo. (Twitter has an internal link shortener and it possibly caches a single logo for a given domain.) From our end, XenForo may have the ability to turn off avatar display or user detail in a particular forum, so that could be a potential solution.

I did suggest some time ago that I could have a more official account for posting the news. I'll raise it again with the committee.
