My guess is that you could well be right; the distraction could at least be a significant component.

Wide spread burning pain is a good description of the myalgia part of myalgic encephalomyelitis. It is probably related to the waste products of anaerobic respiration, pyruvate and lactic acid.

The association with widespread pain was lost when CFS was invented. That is when many people in the US began being diagnosed with CFS and fibromyalgia together and this has spread to the UK. I am helped by using a cherry stone bag heated for 2 minutes in the microwave, better than painkillers but they help too!

I do not think of it as a chronic pain. Like the joint pain in arthritis it is the painful consequence of a chronic illness, a sign of continuing fresh damage to the body.

I laughed when I first searched the definition and came up with "full of mirth". Thanks, chief.

But yeah it's pretty redundant and repetitive.

Sarcastic laughter. For example, when you read a scientific paper that has a firm conclusion that does not follow from the method and results.

Disappointed that they didn’t have a flower arranging cohort for comparison.

That did make me laugh. I have no idea whether my laughter was mirthful, hollow, sarcastic whatever...
But thanks for the laugh anyway.

And don’t forget to ask them how mirthful they feel about carrying the flower arrangement in a shopping bag
