Some Thoughts on Ten Years of Trial By Error
Ten years ago this month, I launched Trial By Error with a 15,000-word investigation of the misbegotten and fraudulent PACE trial, which purported to prove that graded exercise therapy (GET) and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) could cure what they then called chronic fatigue syndrome. And what an amazing ride it’s been for me—difficult and challenging at times, but always fascinating, rewarding and engaging, both intellectually and personally.

I have learned so much, have heard so many heartbreaking stories, and have met–whether in person or online—so many smart, funny, passionate and courageous people. I have also been deeply disturbed by the rampant and flagrant corruption in the editorial and peer-review practices of major medical journals, including those in the Lancet and BMJ stables. Not only have these august publications routinely failed to catch egregious methodological missteps, they have also routinely failed to take appropriate steps to fix problems once they’ve been pointed out. In many instances, their response to legitimate criticism can only be described as a blatant “fuck you.”

Since those early years, the PACE authors and their colleagues have exhibited increasing desperation to protect their intellectual and academic turf. They continue to pretend their research has been robust and meaningful, and view all their critics as losers, creeps or charlatans.

This, to me, is one of the most disgusting things of all. Not only did PACE cause great harm to so many ME/CFS sufferers, by it's grossly disingenuous misrepresentation of their very real illness, but the authors and their enablers have done all they possibly can to perpetuate and reinforce that misrepresentation down the years, for totally selfish and deeply unprofessional reasons. To be blunt, I find that very cowardly. During these last 10 years their have been other scientists who have shown their true courage and professionalism, by clearly reporting that some of their ME/CFS studies failed to produce the outcomes they had hoped for - but that of course is not failure, because they have adhered faithfully to the scientific method, and still advanced science by identifying a dead end for others to not therefore follow. Unlike the Wessely crew.

I confess I feel very bitter towards the PACE authors and their sycophants, because like so many other ME/CFS sufferers, my wife might otherwise by now be benefitting from the outcomes of real, honest, high integrity scientific research into ME/CFS. Instead, these people have played a major part in hindering and stifling such research, primarily because they see it as a threat to the eminence and power they have fraudulently garnered by keeping their own research in the spotlight. I see them as deeply culpable for a great deal of the harm to the very many ME/CFS sufferers, lives effectively destroyed in so many ways, literally in some cases. To my mind, the fact they show not a shred of contrition or shame, clarifies perfectly the kind of people they are.

Thanks to all! I'm relieved it worked out again. The link is still open through the weekend. In the past, I've gotten contacted a day or two later by people who missed or forgot the deadline, and I need to get Berkeley to re-open the link so they can donate. Because this one ended on a weekend, when the tech staff isn't around, they've left it open till Sunday night, in case.
