Covid-19 related treatment and other scams

Amused to see MMS mentioned again - remember the Miracle Mineral Solution that was supposed to cure us of ME? And that turned out to be bleach?

Seems they're the ones whispering in Trump's ear about the wonders of bleach against - you guessed it - COVID19.

From the Guardian article: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...eddling-bleach-cure-lobbied-trump-coronavirus
But the Guardian has learned that peddlers of chlorine dioxide – industrial bleach – have been making direct approaches to the White House in recent days.

Grenon styles himself as “archbishop” of Genesis II – a Florida-based outfit that claims to be a church but which in fact is the largest producer and distributor of chlorine dioxide bleach as a “miracle cure” in the US. He brands the chemical as MMS, “miracle mineral solution”, and claims fraudulently that it can cure 99% of all illnesses including cancer, malaria, HIV/Aids as well as autism.

Since the start of the pandemic, Genesis II has been marketing MMS as a cure to coronavirus. It advises users, including children, to mix three to six drops of bleach in water and drink it.

In his weekly televised radio show, posted online on Sunday, Grenon read out the letter he wrote to Trump. He said it began: “Dear Mr President, I am praying you read this letter and intervene.”

DISCREDITED VIRUS RESEARCHER PUSHES CORONAVIRUS DISINFORMATION
May 7, 2020
A new viral video claiming to be an excerpt from a forthcoming documentary, Plandemic, is the latest in a growing number of Covid-19 disinformation efforts. In it and other videos, discredited virus researcher, Dr. Judy Mikovits, claims among other things that Covid-19 is a manmade virus that cannot be transmitted human to human and discourages handwashing and the wearing of masks.

“Covid-19 disinformation is a threat to public health at-large, but is especially damaging to vulnerable chronic illness and disabled communities,” said Jennifer Brea, co-founder of the patient advocacy organization for people with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), #MEAction. “People with ME/CFS are fighting for good science and are desperate for treatments. We are already living with neurological and immune dysfunction. Getting the facts wrong puts our lives at risk.”

Unfortunately important to get ahead of this as there could be attempts to marginalize us further by associating us with this.

The people involved in this make it clear it's just conspiracy theory galore. It's pushed a lot in some... unsavory... political circles with lots of overlap with anti-5G and anti-vaccine nonsense.

CFS/ME International Awareness Day: LIVE with Dr. Jenny Tufenkian

Join me on May 12th for National CFS & Fibromyalgia Day while I discuss the stereotypes & misconceptions that surround these diseases, LIVE.
About this Event
The people who suffer with CFS and chronic muscle pain feel unheard, unseen, and without hope. Why are CFS/ME sufferers so often misdiagnosed, misunderstood and mistreated?

Join me, Dr. Jenny Tufenkian ND, on May 12th at 12pm PST for National CFS and Fibromyalgia Day while I discuss the stereotypes and misconceptions around these diseases that affect so many people!

It is hard for even their loved ones to understand how much they are suffering, because, they look great and often their lab results are normal. They are too often dismissed by physicians, friends and family members.

They are told: it's all in your head. Or you just need to DO something and you will feel better.

I know, because I too have suffered through Chronic Fatigue Syndrome myself.

How can we change course? What do physicians and patients need to do differently?

Join me as I share my journey of understanding and healing from CFS/ME as a practicing physician.

We will also cover some intriguing ideas and tips:

-Why are women 5 x more likely to suffer than men?

-Why there may be more cases of CFS/ME with Covid-19 Pandemic

-Simple techniques we can all use today to increase our energy

IMO it's probably wise to try to get out ahead of this, rather than risk ignoring a conspiracy theory related to CFS research that seems to be gaining traction in the general public causing harm to ME advocacy efforts. Seems like a really complicated situation to respond to, but I'm glad they're trying to grapple with it.

"A researcher at LM Hospital..."? RUKM

It would appear that Phil Parker is now genuinely 'qualified' as a Dr, and as described in his recent article in the Sun newspaper 'a researcher at the London Metropolitan University'.
This is his doctorate thesis from last year:

http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/5221/
(there is a link to a 393 page document):
"Running head:EVALUATING THE REDISCOVERY PROCESS
Evaluating The Rediscovery Process as a

Substance Use Disorders.

Phil Parker was in The Sun, offering ways to boost ones immune system. Phew. We're saved.

"Exercise can boost your immune system, but only do it if you feel well." Controversial statement, from Phil Parker, there! Isn't that at odds with his previous work on ME/CFS? Well, at least we're off the hook now: if we've got symptoms we no longer need to admonish ourselves for not being well enough to exercise, phew!! Or is it still one rule for M.E. patients and another rule for the rest of society? The current situation with the NICE statement withdrawing graded exercise from post-covid recommendations but not ME/CFS, might suggest that.

Gupta has put out a video on Youtube today
What Causes Chronic Post-Covid-19 Syndrome (CPCS)? | Ashok Gupta | Gupta Program |

Code:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_ZgdqdL7Yg

I've reported this video to Youtube as a scam but they don't appear to have taken any action as yet.

Thanks for reporting it, I will do the same. I'm unsure whether it will have any affect though.

I think the main problems with this video are:

1) He doesn't introduce himself and make it clear that he is not a medical professional or scientist.
2) He doesn't explicitly state that his explanation is just his pet theory and is not backed up by evidence.
3) It is not clear watching it that this video is an advert for his 'program'.

Unfortunately with regards to the second point I think he does actually cover himself by calling it 'this model' at one point. I think that many viewers won't pick up on this though and will assume he is a doctor simply explaining the accepted understanding of CPCS.

A complaint against him to advertising standards was upheld in 2018: https://www.asa.org.uk/rulings/harley-street-solutions-ltd-a17-400324.html . Also, a video he released at the start of the covid outbreak claiming that his approach could reduce the risk of you catching covid was taken down by him (presumably after complaints).

He's very clever in this video, he brings in just enough 'science' to convince the unsuspecting viewer that he is an expert. He refers to his 'clinic' which means nothing but sounds professional. He speaks in a way that makes him sound knowledgeable. I'm not sure he says anything that could be legally challenged though? What do you think?

Too much turmeric, methi, vitamin D — Doctors fight new emergencies driven by Covid fear

Doctors are seeing an increased trend of side-effects in patients that are being caused from taking high doses of self-prescribed natural herbs or medical supplements to boost immunity.

New Delhi: Dr Tejal Lathia, a consulting endocrinologist at the Mumbai-based Apollo and Fortis Hospitals, said she was recently left wondering why a Type 2 diabetes mellitus patient had vitamin D toxicity.

Further investigation revealed the culprits — a fear of contracting Covid-19 and a social media barrage on the unproven claim that vitamin D pills boost immunity.

“The patient had seen messages on social media on how vitamin D may help in building immunity against Covid-19. But instead of the recommended dose of one pill a week, she consumed one a day,” Dr Lathia told ThePrint.

High vitamin D levels can spike blood and urine calcium levels which, in turn, can cause nausea, vomiting, dehydration, dizziness, confusion, and drowsiness among other changes.

Total Life Energy Plan Becomes The First-Ever Complete Healing System For CFS
Posted: Sep 07, 2020
Julia Sun is the leading expert on healing chronic fatigue syndrome and she has been working on the Total Life Energy Plan (TLEP) for over ten years as she aims to provide a comprehensive healing system for CFS. TLEP is the first and only solution that uses several energy healing and cultivation methods to identify affected organs, nourish them, and ultimately rebalance the whole body.

"the leading expert": I've never heard of her, has anyone else?

Julia leverages her knowledge of the concept of life energy to develop TLEP as a wellness program to treat CFS, otherwise known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID) and provide a lasting solution. Identifying the root cause of the disorder as the lack of life energy, TLEP aims to rebalance and re-energize the whole body by nourishing and charging the affected parts with the needed energy.
The COVID-19 pandemic has seemingly worsened CFS conditions and post-treatment dramas, particularly as most COVID-19 deaths are caused by underlying health issues. Consequently, TLEP will come as a lifesaver to many patients, giving them the life energy they lack and ultimately protecting them from the virus. In a similar vein, Julia wrote several posts and developed an exercise program to help people prevent and combat coronavirus during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I seem to recall this person or someone close to them created multiple accounts to sneakily promote their website and videos on the r/cfs subreddit on Reddit by posting fake positive reviews. The moderators ended up deleting all their posts.

Meanwhile Mr Gupta has reposted his video claiming that he knows the cause of post-covid fatigue and that it presumably can be treated with the Gupta Program. (It was taken down initially after complaints were made.)

I love that aside from careless language, this reads exactly like the behavioral model. Not just similar to, it's the exact same substance, just with a less refined sales pitch.

The only difference between some quacks and other quacks is the echo that does or does not return.

Seems to be based on TCM and the "energy" is basically chi:
TLEP is based on life energy, and Traditional Chinese Medicine which has lasted for more than 5000 years, cured countless people, and works under all kinds of living environments.
Cochrane has several reviews on acupuncture, even had a review on Chinese herbs for CFS. This is not much different. When medical authorities promote their own quackery, what's the difference between unofficial woo and official woo? When they sing together it still adds up to woowoo.
