From abstract;

The authors report the unexpected finding of enterovirus VP1 protein, by immunoperoxidase staining, in carcinoid tumours found in one patient with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome and another patient with chronic lower quadrant abdominal pain, and suggest a possible association between enteroviruses and tumorigenesis.

My concern over John Chia's immunoperoxidase staining studies has always been that the staining shown in gut looks very much like the artifactual staining that occurs randomly with monoclonal antibodies in gut epithelium. It is routine problem and there is no way of excluding it other than cross checking with specific binding by other antibodies. I may be wrong but I think he used a monoclonal. Polyclonal antisera are less troublesome but can still produce artifactual staying on glandular epithelium.

In this context the fact that the reagent stains carcinoid tissue tends to confirm that this is artifactual staining. Carcinoid tumours are likely to contain charged molecules such as peptides and glycosylation residues that can pick up antibodies artefactually.

I'm interested in this case report because I have been looking into carcinoid tumors.

These tumors can cause mast cell like reactions - facial flushing, blood pressure changes, diarrhea etc. (They can also be small, and benign.)

What I'm wondering about this case;

Did the ME/CFS patient have symptoms from their carcinoid tumors?

If so, was there any possibility that some of their ME/CFS symptoms were paraneoplastic, that is, also caused by the carcinoid tumors ?

Was treatment for the carcinoid tumors successful? If so, did treatment have any impact on their ME/CFS symptoms?
