According to the latest DWP figures, over three million people are claiming Personal Independence Payment (PIP), awarded to people on the basis of how much physical and/or mental issues are affecting your life.
As reported by MyLondon, the most common for PIP is some form of 'psychiatric disorder', a very broad classification used by the DWP. This includes developmental conditions such as autism, mental illnesses and learning disabilities.
35% of claimants are handed the highest level of PIP, which is currently paying out £156.90 a week. From April 2023, this will go up to £176.75 per week.
Psychiatric disorders account for 37% of claims, with the next most common group of disabilities - musculoskeletal disease (general) - accounting for 20% of claims. The third most common is neurological diseases, which make up 13%.
The fourth most common is regional musculoskeletal disease (12% of claims) and respiratory diseases (4% of claims).
