Causes of death among patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, 2007, Jason et al.

Important not to re-write history on the basis of Chinese Whispers - the figures on ME/CFS mortality come from a 2006 paper: Causes of Death Among Patients With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome full paper at SciHub https://sci-hub.st/10.1080/07399330600803766 Discussion...

Opinion: Treating kids as invulnerable is treating them as disposable

Given the author is a colleague of Timothy Caulfield this is a pretty disappointing article, it's a mess of history, culture and stats that doesn't gel into anything comprehensible. Saying COVID was the leading cause of death amongst <19s sounds terrible but most of those deaths were of kids...

    Open Medicine Foundation (OMF)

"We have determined" isn't exactly precise language - does it mean in vivo research carried out by OMF itself, or does it mean OMF researchers have carried out systemic studies of previously published work ? I'm not encouraged by a following sentence which seems to indicate a lack of scientific...

Persistent somatic symptom related stigmatisation by healthcare professionals: A systematic review... 2023 McGhie-Fraser et al

Weird language construction: "stigmatisation by healthcare professionals towards patients". Stigmatisation is a noun, the name for an outcome of the verb to stigmatise. If healthcare professionals hold a stigma about patients, then by definition it is the healthcare professionals who are...

UK: Doctors will be encouraged to issue fewer sick notes

Wesseley, or indeed any individual is unnecessary to explain any of this - which is just the usual (for the UK) playing out of a particular political perspective associated with one or more wings of the Governing Party, prompted or promoted by an aligned media company story telling in a style...

UK: Doctors will be encouraged to issue fewer sick notes

This is just clickbait pretending to be journalism - the key phrase = "A Government source told The Daily Telegraph" i.e this is Government kite flying via friendly publication - the original article is here: Sick note crackdown to get more people back into work There's deliberate journalistic...

Office of National Statistics: Prevalence of ongoing symptoms following coronavirus (COVID-19) infection in the UK: Updates

As regards the UK, see fig 4 above; while the long term ill figure has increased by around 350,000, the number "looking after family/home" has fallen by 100,000+. By age the greatest increase in economic inactivity has been amongst the 50-64 age group (Fig 3a below) who may be as much affected...

UK: Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) articles, blogs and discussion

(not a lawyer) I don't think it's possible to extrapolate from that small amount of detail as to whether negligence was involved. Questions such as: Was there avoidable error ? Was there available alternative treatment which was delayed ? Were there avoidable consequences of wrong illness...

Presence of depression and anxiety with distinct patterns of pharmacological treatments before the diagnosis of CFS 2023 Chen et al

The study itself maybe sound but the cohort identification is based on Taiwanese diagnoses 2000 - 2010 which looks to have some conflation with chronic fatigue (criteria is Fukada 1994), study says: "With regard to the prevalence of comorbidities, participants with CFS had higher numbers of...

    PEM without heart rate change?

I've never had HR issues, PEM related or otherwise. Age is messing things up but I had ME/CFS for at least two decades and maintained a good HR response to activity/rest patterns and no obvious variations in PEM versus non PEM.
