Well-known, famous people with Covid-19 and Long Covid

"BBC presenter praised for 'powerful words' on crisis
A clip of the BBC's Emily Maitlis opening current affairs programme Newsnight has been widely shared online.

Maitlis debunked the idea that coronavirus was a "great leveller" that had affected equally the rich and poor, calling it a "myth".

"Those on the front line right now, bus drivers, shelf stackers, nurses, care home workers, hospital staff and shopkeepers - they are disproportionately the lower paid members of our workforce. They are more likely to catch the disease because they are more exposed." "

Video clip can be found at 8.30 on the BBC live news feed 9th April

Yes, also this very helpful comment from Emily Maitlis in her introduction:

The language around Covid-19 has sometimes felt trite and misleading. You do not survive the illness through fortitude and strength of character, whatever the prime ministers colleagues will tell us.

They are the heroes.

Boris 'planning to QUIT as PM next year' says Dom Cummings’ dad-in-law

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...er-law.html?ito=native_share_article-masthead

Downing Street was today forced to deny an extraordinary claim that Boris Johnson is planning to quit as Prime Minister in six months time due to his health - made by Dominic Cummings' father-in-law.

Sir Humphry Wakefield is said to have told a holidaymaker who visited his castle in Northumberland that the Prime Minister is still suffering longer-term ill effects of coronavirus.

The baronet, 84, a former soldier and interior designer whose journalist daughter Mary is married to top aide Mr Cummings, likened the Prime Minister to a horse that is made to work while injured, leaving it permanently lame, according to the Times.

'If you put a horse back to work when it's injured it will never recover,' it reported him as saying.

No10 this morning said the claim Mr Johnson would step down was 'total nonsense'.

Moved from the post Covid thread.

So, this feels a bit gossipy but The Guardian is reporting that Boris Johnson appears to still be having significant problems post-COVID19:

The 84-year-old baronet, father of [Dominic] Cummings’ wife, Mary, told visitor Anna Silverman Johnson was still struggling badly after having coronavirus and would step down in six months, according to a report in the Times.

Wakefield, a lifelong horse rider, is said to have likened the virus to being gone in the fetlock, a horse’s joint. “If you put a horse back to work when it’s injured it will never recover,” he reportedly said.

[Personal editorial note: Why is it we can recognize this is true about horses but not about people? But I digress... ]

Johnson, of course, denies there are any problems:

Asked during a visit to a shipyard in north Devon on Tuesday about the claim he would be standing down as prime minister, Johnson told a Devon Live reporter: “It’s absolute nonsense! I am feeling, if anything, far better as I’ve lost some weight. Not enough, but I have lost at least a stone and a half.

“I feel much much better for having lost, by my standards, quite a lot of weight.”

While I know Johnson has said he's trying to lose weight, given the prominence of bullshitting PR spin to everything in politics these days, it's difficult to know if the weight loss truly has been intentional or simply reflects being sick. Haven't weight changes been associated with the initial phase of ME?

Granted, it's a bit early to say the PM has ME, especially as, again, this report is nothing more than gossip.

The article then goes on to reference a recent study from the University of Bristol showing that 75% of those hospitalized for COVID19 are still experiencing profound fatigue and muscle aches three months after being discharged, even though "reassuringly" there is no evidence of lung damage on imaging studies.

There was a picture in Evening Standard showing Boris trying to jog with personal trainer looking very miserable.
I actually thought that it looked pretty dangerous. Trying to lose weight by eating less is perfectly sensible and exercising is a good idea IF YOU ARE WELL, but exercising hard when sick or fat is not without hazard. He might go into ventricular fibrillation any time.

Silvio Berlusconi tests positive for Covid-19 after Sardinia visit

Berlusconi, who led three Italian governments between early 1994 and 2011, was tested for Covid-19 in light of his recent stay in Sardinia, where there have been several coronavirus clusters in recent weeks.

He was recently pictured at his villa on the Costa Smeralda alongside Flavio Briatore, the former Formula One team boss and owner of the island’s Billionaire nightclub, where an outbreak occurred. As of late August, more than 60 coronavirus cases had been linked to the club, which hosted thousands of guests, including Italian and international VIPs, during the month.

Donald Trump & Melania test positive.

Edit:

"[...] Trump traveled to New Jersey and met with supporters at his Bedminster Golf Club, and delivered remarks at a fundraising committee reception. The night before, he spoke at a rally in Duluth, Minnesota, before a packed crowd of thousands, most of whom were not wearing masks to slow the spread of infection.

It is unusual for Covid-19 patients to receive a positive PCR test result just one day after exposure, public health experts say, and Trump may have been carrying the virus for longer – exposing those he interacted with this week.*
