United States: 2023 Feb online conference - Long COVID: What Will It Take to Accelerate Therapeutic Progress?

Second speaker is Adm. Rachel Levine, Assistant Secretary of Health and paediatrician.

"It is also important that we acknowledge that infection-associated chronic illness is not a new phenomenon. ... In my practice in adolescent medicine ... I saw many teens and young adults with symptoms of dysautonomia and ME/CFS and I know the challenges that the patients and families face. I believe we can leverage the existing science and the commonalities experienced by patients with all of these conditions to support research, diagnostics and treatments."

In response to the question on retiring the name "long COVID" David Putrino replies that he thinks we should keep it as an umbrella term that, by necessity was broad to capture the whole group of outcomes. Only once we have very well characterised sub-types with targeted treatments should we think about renaming them, while still keeping them under the umbrella. But we have a lot of work to do first.
