Edited to change the thread title to that of the BBC Radio 4 3-part series introduced by this online article in BBC Health News: http://www.bbc.com/news/health-43674270

Human cells make up only 43% of the body's total cell count. The rest are microscopic colonists.

Understanding this hidden half of ourselves - our microbiome - is rapidly transforming understanding of diseases from allergy to Parkinson's.

BBC Health and Science correspondent James Gallagher explores the latest research into how our second genome, the vast and diverse array of microbes that live on and in our bodies, is driving our metabolism and our health.

I posted it here in the forum for Health News and Research unrelated to ME/CFS, but fyi for those who don't know, a UK programme of research investigating the gut microbiome in ME is currently ongoing at Norwich Research Park: https://quadram.ac.uk/targets/me-cfs/ hub of the Invest in ME Research Centre of Excellence for ME: http://www.investinme.org/research-centre.shtml)

Sounds like the makings of a good Sci-Fi novel, with some form of intelligent life developing in there. Or some other-world species where it has evolved that way.
