It's nice to see the spin off from one's work get so popular but Topol could do with getting a few more facts right.

Maria cured some ladies with lupus in 2000 - or at least they remitted for as long as these CAR-T people. Mind you if it works, I am very happy.

I would also be very happy if the recent progress helped people with malignant disease avoid all the trauma of conventional high dose therapy.
 
Cancer biology is the mirror image of autoimmunity. Predisposition to cancer occurs when the immune system is hypoactive, losing its protection, whereas autoimmune disease reflects hyperactivity and a dysregulated state. The approach to these 2 different diseases is like a rheostat, dialing the immune system up for cancer or down for autoimmune disease.

Does autoimmune diseases involve a hyperactive immune system though? Or is it more a case of aiming at the wrong target?

There is unwanted activity, but that doesn’t equal hyperactivity per se.
