The Canary: I was humbled by the ‘millions missing’ yesterday. Now it’s time for unrest.

I like that article.

As the UN said of the UK government last year, it has helped create a society where disabled people are viewed as “parasites, living on social benefits… and [living on] the taxes of other people”. This applies to the ME community.
If I remember correctly something like that was said about Germany, that the German government increased the gap between rich and poor and the number of poor people.

What is the canary?

To add - 'Canary in a coal mine' is a English saying.

An allusion to caged canaries (birds) that miners would carry down into the mine tunnels with them. If dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide collected in the mine, the gases would kill the canary before killing the miners, thus providing a warning to exit the tunnels immediately.

So an early warning system or device.

I think this was more cautiously phrased, and better for it, than some of the earlier Topper articles "actively promoted ME as a partly psychological, medically unexplained illness; the PACE trial is testament to this."

I think it's usually best to avoid that whole 'psych vs bio' thing, but phrasing like that is much better in that 'all in the mind/head' stuff that journalists can often end up using. Good stuff.
