Psychotherapeutic Interventions in Irritable Bowel Syndrome, 2020, Hetterich and Stengel

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a frequent functional gastrointestinal disorder. The patients complain about various symptoms like change in bowel habits, constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain, and meteorism leading to a great reduction in quality of life. The pathophysiology is complex and best explained using the biopsychosocial model encompassing biological, psychological as well as (psycho)social factors. In line with the multitude of underlying factors, the treatment is comprised of a multitude of components. Often, patients start with lifestyle changes and dietary advice followed by medical treatment. However, also psychotherapy is an important treatment option for patients with IBS and should not be restricted to those with psychiatric comorbidities. Several evidence-based psychotherapeutic treatment options exist such as psychoeducation, self-help, cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, mindfulness-based therapy, and relaxation therapy which will be discussed in the present review.

New word to add to my vocabulary: meteorism. Seems to mean anything from normal flatulence (gas accumulation in the bowel) to life threatening bowel necrosis depending which definition you read.
Yeah I had to look that one and having looked at it it's frankly even more puzzling.
pathophysiology is complex and best explained using the biopsychosocial model
This is completely self-contradictory. BPS assumes no pathophysiology, it's literally the whole point.
the treatment is comprised of a multitude of components
THE treatment? There is no treatment. That's part of what makes it all so problematic.
However, also psychotherapy is an important treatment option
Important to you does not mean objectively important. Especially here. You are not a brain in a jar somewhere living a simulated universe that exists for your personal existence. This is borderline failing at object permanence.
Several evidence-based psychotherapeutic treatment options exist
treatment options exist
Of all the lowered standards I have seen, this is the lowest of them all. Lots of treatment options for all bunches of things exist. Treatment options exist for your thetans imbalance or your karma:orgone ratio disruption.

I have the very lowest expectations for BPS research and still I am continuously amazed at how those expectations keep getting lower and lower, a kind of asymptote reaching the limit of negative infinity that still manages to eke out that smallest increment of more mediocrity without fail.
