Psychiatric Views on Other Phenomena in the Past, Discussion Thread

I wanted to make a general thread where we can discuss and collect evidence of how Psychiatry has tended to view phenomena (illnesses, lifestyles, personalities, sexual orientations, gender identities etc.) in the past.

Especially of interest to make comparisons to ME/CFS and perhaps observe how these ideas sprout up and die.

I found this quote by Henry Gerber (a German-USian) gay rights activist. And it made me think of similar logical flaws that have been used with ME/CFS.

Is not the psychiatrist again putting the cart before the horse in saying that homosexuality is a symptom of the neurotic style of life? Would it not sound more natural to say that the homosexual is made neurotic because his style of life is beset by thousands of dangers?
