ME RESEARCH
Sir, As someone who has been diagnosed with severe ME for 26 years, since the age of 19, I was saddened to learn of the death of Merryn Crofts (“ME sufferer who was dismissed as hysterical vindicated in death”, May 26). However, I was not surprised to read of the disbelief that she endured during her short life. Such mistreatment is the legacy of decades of underinvestment in biomedical ME research.

ME is estimated to cost the UK economy at least £3.3 billion a year. Research shows that, on average, people with ME score lower on health-related quality-of-life scores and are more disabled than people suffering from [most] other chronic conditions, including multiple sclerosis and heart disease. And yet ME research receives a tiny percentage of the funding given to other diseases of similar burden.

How many more lives must be destroyed before the government will ensure that appropriate funding is allocated to biomedical ME research?

It appears in Wednesday’s edition. The omission of “most” is their error.
