    I doubt this would necessarily cast doubt on the possibility that ME could be a problem in the mitochondria, though of course that is itself very much unproven yet. Although battery packs comprising multiple independent batteries can be more resilient to some failure modes, that would not make them resilient to all failure modes. If there is something that attacks the individual batteries, and can migrate from one to another, then the whole battery pack could still be affected.

    There are many mitochondria in one cell

    scientists generally agree that the mitochondria in human cells come from bacteria that were incorporated into primitive cells about 1.5 billion years ago.

    Altogether, our data support a new model in which cristae within the same mitochondrion behave as independent bioenergetic units, preventing the failure of specific cristae from spreading dysfunction to the rest.
