Thank you for the perspectives on terminology, bedside manner, and to take it steady. And for the fact sheet,
@Kitty!
Re: clinicians and researchers ought to use the same language. Yes!! That's why I try to educate myself about the varying perspectives, so I can work toward bridging the gap in my own practice. I'll never be perfect, always learning.
Re: medical diagnoses. My specialty is a specific pediatric population. Perhaps allied health providers with different licenses or specialties than mine have different relationships with assigning/contesting medical diagnoses.
I give function-related diagnoses within my domain, more specific than what a doctor gives. (I love how you described the role of allied health,
@Jonathan Edwards!) I'm NOT licensed to confirm or deny the presence or absence of medical diagnoses such as cancer, genetic conditions, etc.
When I suspect a medical diagnosis (or misdiagnosis), I refer for eval with the appropriate provider and educate the family about my concerns.
If a patient does not qualify for therapy for whatever reason, I educate the patient/family about that reality and point them to any resources I know of.
I have yet to encounter MECFS etc as a clinician. This is why I reached out to you all, who know much more about this than I do.
(Also
@Jonathan Edwards and all, please forgive my vague and sometimes inaccurate language. I'm not revealing which allied health type I am, but I'm definitely not educated in all the disciplines within allied, only my own. I have echoed some terms from my colleagues in other types of allied that you haven't agreed with, and I'm not educated enough in those fields to know which terms are best. I'm still learning about MECFS as a patient/layperson!)
As a patient, I wish someone had raised MECFS awareness to my providers. Maybe if we'd identified it sooner, I wouldn't have spent so many years gaslighting myself and pushing through. Maybe I could have preserved some of my abilities for longer. (
@Utsikt, your story resonates more than you know.)
I wonder if I might be able to bring awareness for someone else in this case.
Again, I appreciate your attention to detail and helpful perspectives that are teaching me so much.
