Chinese Universities Surge in Global Rankings as U.S. Schools Slip

Until recently, Harvard was the most productive research university in the world, according to a global ranking that looks at academic publication.

That position may be teetering, the most recent evidence of a troubling trend for American academia.

Harvard recently dropped to No. 3 on the ranking. The schools racing up the list are not Harvard’s American peers, but Chinese universities that have been steadily climbing in rankings that emphasize the volume and quality of research they produce.

This is the equivalent to h-index and other citation metrics but for unis.

Probably so. But the article also mentions other metrics,

But there is no doubt Chinese research is ascendant. See this recent NEJM article I posted…100% Chinese authors/institutions.

Abstract​

BACKGROUND​

In patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), the risk of relapse is high owing to persistent autoreactive B-cell activity. Multirefractory AIHA is a more advanced stage of disease that is defined by a lack of response to at least three lines of therapy. CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy results in profound B-cell depletion and may be a useful approach to achieving drug-free remission in multirefractory AIHA.

No doubt that these rankings and their different metrics are just meaningless popularity circlejerks even when you sort the rankings by discipline. They are of course very lucrative for the universities where you pay a high fee or for those areas where a degree is a certificiate of authority and higher pay, which is a massive part of the industry.

However, from what I've heard, the chinese universities are also improving where it matters, at least in certain subjects.
