Burning heat sensation when seated for a long time

Over the last few months I have developed a new symptom. Whenever I sit or lay for any length of time (30mins or more) I get a very hot, burning type sensation in my buttocks, back and head ( ie any part of me in contact with a surface). I have tried a wide variety of cushions, mattress toppers, pillows etc but it makes no difference. My GP is at a loss except to suggest a pressure relief cushion but this didn't work either. The only relief I get is from sitting on cooling gel packs and it is making me miserable. So does anyone else suffer from this or does anyone have any suggestions as to what else I can try? Thanks.

Could it be neuropathic? Amitriptyline would be the go-to prescription drug for that. A doctor would probably prescribe it easily enough on a trial basis (it'll help with sleep too). Vitamin B12 may also help if you're low/deficient (alternatively, you could be too high...).

But it could be vascular too (related to circulation). Poor blood flow causing pain. Maybe something to help with blood flow would help (viagra was my first thought--don't laugh--but there are probably better things to take, and a number of supplements)!

Magnesium may also help if it's due to poor intracellular magnesium (if you've got tight and aching muscles).

Thanks for the reply. I am already on escitalopram and pregabalin so doubt my doc will want to add amitriptyline! MY B12 levels were high last time they were tested. I have tried compression socks too bu tit didn't make much difference. I am female so not sure about viagra but I will investigate to see if there is something similar. Will up my magnesium intake too. Any other ideas will be gratefully received.

If you are in your 40s, have you considered a pre-menopausal causation?

That was my first thought too. I upped my HRT medication to see if that would help but it didn't. I do think it may exacerbate the issue but I don't think it is the root cause. Wish it had been because it would have been much easier to fix!

Raised B12 can cause tingling and neuropathic-type symptoms, but there's some debate about what actually counts as 'high' anyway.

You can read more about vasodilators here. Then there's stuff about viagra, nimodipine and choline that may help you figure it out.

Clonidine is also used for neuropathic pain, and may affect circulation. It also helps with sleep, apparently, so would do a similar job to amitriptypine. Though I don't think you can mix it with SSRIs.

You can check drug interactions ahead of a consultation with your GP here.
