Tim Roache, 57, stepped down months after being re-elected to the top job at GMB, which has more than 620,000 members.

The union said in a statement yesterday that Mr Roache was signed off work on medical grounds earlier this week. It added that some years ago he was given a diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome, which previously resulted in two years’ absence from work.
