PEM: A thread for sharing your experience of post-exertional malaise

Do you get delayed PEM that makes your ME/CFS more severe for a day or more, up to and including permanently? I have started this thread to focus entirely on each poster describing your own experience of PEM. My aim is that we avoid theorising about the underlying biology - keep the focus on...

    Avoiding crashes as a treatment

Not sure if there are many other examples, but Ron Davis mentions one potentially successful case (or could be spontaneous remission) of someone recovering after avoiding crashes for a year: "One researcher had ME and she didn't have a crash and after a year she got better."

    The “Permanent Worsening” Phenomenon

In the patient community, it seems somewhat common to refer to instances where PEM (or a crash) led to worsening of the condition which was permanent. I have however yet to find a reference to this in the literature, if someone knows of one, I would be grateful as it is of interest to me, thanks!

    PENE crash and muscle pain

I have seen some discussions here and there around the puzzling fact of muscle pain being a consequence of neural exhaustion, whatever that actually means in pathophysiology, but not within a formal thread. It's not quite clear how much distinction there is between PEM and PENE. Maybe they are...

Is PEM a crash? Is a crash PEM? Semantically distinct? Or distinct phenomena?

My question really is about the semantics of 'crash' and 'PEM'. I guess I used to use both these words somewhat interchangeably and wanted to ask PRers what they think. In my experience with ME, PEM, or a worsening of symptoms, happens after mental or physical overexertion and only when I have...

What does your crash feel like?

I’m currently crashing and I’m just curious about how you would describe your crashes/flares/PEM/bust phases? What does it feel like? (Bearing in mind I won’t be able to read long answers ;)) To me it feels like the top of my spine is inflamed and also the area which is likely my spleen. Light...

Does anyone else get IBS as part of a crash?

Title says it all really. I normally don't have gut issues but due to recent over-exertion I not only crashed but it also brought on a painful, swollen abdomen with constipation, which is now starting to ease off. This pattern has happened to me before, most notably 14 months ago following a...
