Development of a conceptual framework to underpin a health-related quality of life outcome measure in paediatric CFS/ME - Crawley et al Jan 2020

Interesting that there are a mix of positive and negative outcomes in that list. I would find those very hard to rank at one time. I would also feel suspicious that the number of either positive outcomes, or negative outcomes, that I ranked near the top of my list, would somehow be...

Should rehabilitation goals reflect all aspects of functioning in relation to a biopsychosocial ICF perspective?, 2019, Riis-Djernaes et al

Okay here’s something that struck me: Read the first arrow below, and tell me as a patient which would be the “Main Concept” for you? I would say the main concept was “to have more energy”, and that would mean being able “to participate in leisure activities and journeys”. Without the “more...

Should rehabilitation goals reflect all aspects of functioning in relation to a biopsychosocial ICF perspective?, 2019, Riis-Djernaes et al

Why are such studies (with loads of self-important words) given funding? I mean I know people want to improve what they can do, but this whole “goal setting” notion can get taken too far. It seems to me that a patient asked to set a goal is put in a Catch 22 situation. Set a goal that you...

A potential S4ME project: What are the basic science facts that ME advocates need to know and understand?

Duplication is not a problem I think. An astute individual finding a new topic that interests them, will want to explore that topic from a variety of angles. If the message they read is explained in a similar manner from a number of sources, that repetition will only help to consolidate...

Exploring the validity of the chalder fatigue scale in chronic fatigue syndrome - 1998 Morriss et al

Yes, it says that at the top of the questionnaire, but the headers for each of the tick boxes says “usual”... why does it not just say “when last well” in those headers? ? How easy is it for patients to keep making the mental leap to “when well”, when the headers all compare to “usual”?

Exploring the validity of the chalder fatigue scale in chronic fatigue syndrome - 1998 Morriss et al

I searched online to find the questionnaire, and looked at several places where it is available. All use “usual”. I think were that changed, it would need to be described as a modified version of the CFQ? I really don’t understand how this questionnaire ever passed the first glance from...

Exploring the validity of the chalder fatigue scale in chronic fatigue syndrome - 1998 Morriss et al

Just to clarify, this questionnaire, by its very nature, is setting patients up to declare a full recovery on a treatment that has zero effect.

Exploring the validity of the chalder fatigue scale in chronic fatigue syndrome - 1998 Morriss et al

I cannot see how this scale could EVER be taken seriously. Look at the instructions, and think like a patient. To what should the patient be comparing their symptoms “in the last month”? Should it be compared to “when last well” or to “usual”? The header says to “usual”. So, a patient who...

Early warning signs of brain injury fatigue: It's like a switch is flipped

This is interesting. I can have occasional short term episodes where my coordination becomes like some-one with cerebral palsy. Or so it feels to me. The most recent episode was when I went out for a restaurant meal. We went mid-week thinking it would be quieter for me (we were a party of 3...

    More PACE trial data released

Ah! Interesting... .I hadn’t quite realised that.

    More PACE trial data released

I wonder how well the physical function ratings tally with actual function as would be measured by a 6 minute walking test? I would have thought that the decision on whether to do the walk test should have been independent of trial arm. So the average and range of physical function scores for...

Noise cancelling headphones! Oh Joy! (and other ways to block sound)

I have those Sony ones. And yes they are pricey, but they are quite amazing I think! Although mine do have buttons on the left ear pad. One to turn them on/off and another that switches between noise cancelling and ambient sound. I used them flying recently, and they were brilliant. I...

    More PACE trial data released

Rather telling @Barry - not much difference is there? Imagine being shown those 4 graphs with no labels, and being told you could pick your treatment based on the results. Which would you choose? There really isn’t a clear favourite jumping out for notice!! Perhaps opt for the GET option in...

https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/for-doctors/hopeful-medicine “Motivation is the key to lifestyle changes Healthcare professionals do rightly assume that individuals should work with them to adopt healthier lifestyles, a mandate now part of the NHS 10 year plan. At the same time...

Noise cancelling headphones! Oh Joy! (and other ways to block sound)

I doesn’t feel like more sound. I think it genuinely is a noise “cancelling” effect, like the head phones somehow reduce the sound. With my ones I can still hear some sounds but they are very much muffled, and some background sounds disappear altogether.

Noise cancelling headphones! Oh Joy! (and other ways to block sound)

I’ll need to check the model, but they are Sony & more expensive than I would have paid, but they are good. (Edit - my husband bought them for me. <3 )

Noise cancelling headphones! Oh Joy! (and other ways to block sound)

I have just discovered the bliss offered by noise cancelling headphones!! I had thought they would only be good for the really severe, and so had never considered them for myself. However I had started using my ear buds (the ones I use for Audio books) in busy places, and whilst good at muting...

    Weighted blankets

If weight was added to the edges of the sheets you use, would that help the sheets feel heavier? Maybe someone could roll up some material to form a sort of sausage, that could be tacked into the inside of a duvet cover, around the edges? Would that give enough weight sensation, without added...

Cochrane Review: 'Exercise therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome' 2017, Larun et al. - Recent developments, 2018-19

Oh but if they tried this, then the homeopathists would claim high success: “Homeopathy found to be every bit as successful as the highly acclaimed CBT and GET.” And see what I did there - my imaginary headline gave CBT & GET an extra boost by asserting they are strong themselves. You can be...

Cochrane Review: 'Exercise therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome' 2017, Larun et al. - Recent developments, 2018-19

So which would patients prefer: a false hope that will certainly be dashed (and the patient blamed), or an honest appraisal of the situation? There can still be “hope”, even whilst no treatment exists and prognosis is poor, but that requires a medical profession that does not fob the patient...
