"...I'll take whatever you want, as long as it helps" Nutrition talk for people with ME/CFS in group fitness, 2025, Keurulainen (in Finnish)

I didn't even bother trying to get an appointment with a nutritionist. I expected their response would be along the lines of: "Which well-known disease would you like a pamphlet for?"

Opinion Nociplastic pain: controversy of the concept

Blind men describing an elephant? It may be a long time before we can map out precisely which neurons are responsible for the perception of pain.

David Fajgenbaum - Every Cure, non-profit for drug repurposing using AI

"By studying his own blood, David identified an overactive immune signaling pathway." We're still waiting for that identification for ME. We can't look for a drug to fix a pathway we can't find. Once that pathway is found, this sort of organization could help.

"...I'll take whatever you want, as long as it helps" Nutrition talk for people with ME/CFS in group fitness, 2025, Keurulainen (in Finnish)

While foods have a significant impact on my symptom severity, it's not because the foods are more or less "nutritional". Viewing the data through the lens of "nutritional value" is going to lead to invalid correlations.

Growing old versus ME/CFS—which is which?

A lot of "common knowledge" ends up being proven false. I expect that some people are less able at various things as they age, but others remain able. You could "prove" that old people can't build muscles easily by selecting some feeble elderly and comparing them to healthy, active young...

Growing old versus ME/CFS—which is which?

As Kitty pointed out, if you did have an ME remission, it's so dramatic that you'd know the symptoms weren't just old age. As for other health problems, I like to blame them on ME. If we have to put up with this awful disease, might as well get some use from it.

Stop looking for a silver bullet. Start mixing the Long COVID cocktail. Sick Times

If there's no understanding of the mechanism, randomly trying chemicals is better than nothing. However, since the chance of one helping is extremely low, the amount worth investing is also extremely low, as is the worthiness of trying risky chemicals. So, for a PWME, trying random foods...

    Needing to lie flat

That reminds me of a vehicle (popular American brand?) that would prevent starting if a rear brake light (maybe other lights too) was burned out. Who thought that was a good design decision? The developing brain probably makes some random connections that turn out to be a bad "decision". If...

    Needing to lie flat

For me, it'e easiest to fall asleep lying on my left side. I get into bed, lying on my right side for a while, then I roll over and it "feels right". What is being sensed where, and processed where, remains a mystery. There must be some data on whether people can learn to change their...

Stop looking for a silver bullet. Start mixing the Long COVID cocktail. Sick Times

No, no. It has to be a cocktail, so add some guava, artichokes, and some rare, expensive mushroom. If that doesn't fix LC, there are several billion other possible combinations to try, all equally likely--or unlikely--to work.

Mental work seems to lead to sound sensitivity and poor sleep

For the effects of CLAs (conjugate linoleic acids) on my wakings, there are minor differences between sunflower (or safflower) and canola oils, and between those and ruminant fat. Oddly, the veggie oils didn't work reliably two days in a row, but alternating sunflower and canola did work. It's...

Why the BPS people think the way they do

Well, of course. That's provably false. The BPS crowd depends on claims that can't be proven false. They don't care that they can't be proven true, just not false.

Why the BPS people think the way they do

Yes, that's why it's successful. I suppose this sort of scamming is simply evolution: there are resources to exploit, and organisms have figured out a successful way to exploit them and avoid the defenses. Cowbirds are an example of this. If you want to counter this sort of scam, you need to...

Mental work seems to lead to sound sensitivity and poor sleep

Other protein sources don't have the same effect as eggs. I'm wondering whether it's a hormone involved in keeping the embryo "asleep". Conjugated linoleic acids (found in ruminant meat and some seeds) improves my sleep in a different way (reduces wakings during the night).

Why the BPS people think the way they do

Do they believe their theories, or is BPS simply a system for always being successful despite not doing anything? If you Fire an arrow and then place the target so that the arrow is in the center, you can brag about your amazing ability to always hit the center. BPS fires their arrow, adjusts...

Mental work seems to lead to sound sensitivity and poor sleep

If I do mental or physical exertion too late in the day (past 6:30?), insomnia is likely ... unless I eat an egg (usually in pancakes). For some reason, that works for me. One of those "can't explain why it works, but it does" discoveries.

You Might Have Already Fallen for MAHA’s Conspiracy Theories

Maybe it's due to the drop in the cost of presenting information. When publishing and distributing a newspaper was a major investment, it was important to compete with other papers, which meant the quality of writers and reporters, and such factors as trusworthiness. I think there was...

You Might Have Already Fallen for MAHA’s Conspiracy Theories

I was wondering: was there a peak for ethical media? From my memories, there were times when science journals, newspapers, etc, were reasonably trustworthy. Is that just biased memories on my part, or biases selection of media in those times? If media was more trustworthy in the past, what...

Improving images used to depict ME/CFS

Yes, but they're indistinguishable from people with severe cancer or other such diseases. Those photos will just be generic for "severely ill people". I can't think of anything specific to ME that is photographable.

Hidden gut cells could transform food allergy treatment

Interesting. My food intolerances aren't histamine reactions, but they worsen my ME symptoms, so maybe this is the pathway.
