Opinion Chronic fatigue syndromes: real illnesses that people can recover from, 2023, The Oslo Chronic Fatigue Consortium

Coming to this very late, but prompted by the Vink & Vink preprint, I went back to the original. Still looking through it but I did find something which I think @dave30th & @George Monbiot and others may find amusing. They love to footnote this nonsense with sources. I saw this: And I...

American Psychosomatic Society no longer "Psychosomatic?"

What it shows yet again is how they adopt patients' descriptions of their illness. It starts back in the 1980s when they say that the only symptom is pretty much just fatigue and then each time patients say it's more than that and describe something else, they simply add the symptom or description.

    Who is Simon Wessely?

On the subject of analogies, I'm not sure if this one has been made before but I couldn't help but think of someone when I read this today: 'In the PG Wodehouse story The Rummy Affair of Old Biffy, Sir Roderick Glossop (“nerve specialist” and “loony doctor”)...'

Article by Fiona Fox (SMC) for the Revolutionary Communist Party (c. 1996)

Nothing of great interest, but some good background stuff. I like the way the Institute of Ideas is described as 'left-wing'. Two things stood out. This paragraph, Fiona talking about Claire: She held very strong views and there were massive rows, mainly about her becoming a communist. She’d...

Opinion Appraisal of Clinical Practice Guideline: NICE clinical practice guideline for [ME/CFS]: diagnosis and management, 2024, Sarah Tyson

It is an interesting question. My own view is that as far as medical help is concerned a properly briefed general practice nurse would be fine. A greater need I think is practical help: how to access social care, etc. There may be also be a need for a knowledge centre, but we also know what...

Has there ever been any evidence that health professionals are more represented among ME patients?

I've seen this said a lot, particularly in Wessely's earlier work. Does anyone know if there is any actual evidence to support the claim that 'health professionals appear to be over-represented' among those with ME?

Opinion Appraisal of Clinical Practice Guideline: NICE clinical practice guideline for [ME/CFS]: diagnosis and management, 2024, Sarah Tyson

This I think is a key point. When you're ready, you do it. We don't need programmes or encouragement. We just start doing more.

Opinion: ‘You don’t want to get better’: the outdated treatment of ME/CFS patients is a national scandal - George Monbiot

It is all rather subdued, especially compared to the tirades that have been unleashed in the past. Sharpe's is rather flat.

That kind of timing is typical. I can remember at least once when the BPS crowd launched something strong here to time with ME Awareness Day.

    Who is Simon Wessely?

I could also call it a lot of other things. But I'd then have to report myself for being political.

A general thread on the PACE trial!

Yes, Vivli is the one they have been promoting. It's important to note they have not released data as if it were in response to an FOI. They have released data for researchers only. As @Midnattsol points out, some highly qualified researchers have tried and then gave up. This is what one of...
