ME Epidemiology - prevalence and peak ages of onset

I have just tried the running total, and that puts the numbers of patients in the millions. There's something fundamental here that I cannot get my head around, and it's frustrating. You need an incidence rate of 0.01% to get the overall numbers down to 166,000.

ME Epidemiology - prevalence and peak ages of onset

That's where my brain starts to get confused. I think I have gone wrong, and need to insert a running total next to column B, and it is that total that represents the number of people infected: the number infected in each age group plus all the people in that age group who were infected at an...

ME Epidemiology - prevalence and peak ages of onset

@Amw66 it is only a rough calculation: there is no point in refining it if my understanding is wrong, and to be honest, there isn't much value in tweaking it all. But different incidence rates with different cohorts will not have a major impact on the overall numbers. Starting at age 12 was just...

ME Epidemiology - prevalence and peak ages of onset

Start of merged thread I have been puzzling about incidence rates, prevalence and recovery rates for some years now. Am I correct in assuming an incidence rate reflects the probability that someone will fall ill with the condition during that year, that prevalence indicates the number or...

    e-coli infection and leaky gut

If I can be of any help, that would be good. But not if they are already well into it and I would only be an extra distraction.

    Nurses for ME

Hi there. I'm a bit slow picking up on developments lately: five trips into hospital for recurring sepsis/liver abscesses since 26th July, plus cataracts, has set me behind a bit! I'm a member of the Sussex and Brighton Patient Educator's group, and have recently compiled a spreadsheet of...

    e-coli infection and leaky gut

Well, I have been out of hospital for just over 2 weeks now (5 visits in all), and my GP has taken over. This means that I actually get blood tests to determine whether the infection is still there before I stop the antibiotics. It's so nice to be handed on to someone who thinks. Have you seen...

Dialogues for a neglected illness - videos on experiences of people with ME (funded by Wellcome Foundation)

Carrots are not a success story in my household. I planted three rows of them, shortly before my excursions into exotic parts (the local hospital). The slugs ate every last trace of them, apart from one which landed inside a protective collar that I use for my runner beans. On a previous...

Well done @Natalie ! And I accept the new label, Graham – slave driver, with my usual modesty and charm.

Pacing - what do you do/how would you describe it?

The other aspect that I failed to mention was switching: from say a cognitive problem, to some walking, to something that involves arms, back to cognitive etc, all in shorter bursts. I seem to be able to maximise total activity that way. Or I might be kidding myself.

Well, as usual, here is my rubbishy first draft, just to kick off suggestions and redrafts. I'm going to keep stirring until people are sick of me. Mind you, that might not take long.

The analogy is getting into debt with a loan shark. You might manage if you only go a little over, but if you go too far ....

Pacing - what do you do/how would you describe it?

I have a much more casual attitude to pacing than most of you, and a one-off monitoring device that has so far proven to be utterly reliable. I do things that I enjoy, or even things that need to be done, until I get the first hints of weariness, then stop. That's about it really. My trustworth...

Perhaps a letter to Dr Stuart Ritchie? (edited to add: you know, I'd forgotten completely about this. My two brain cells can only handle so much you know.)

    e-coli infection and leaky gut

Unfortunately, standing there with my underpants over my long johns, they were injecting me with kryptonite. But I am disappointed that you have seen through my disguise of wearing glasses. It worked for Clark Kent, after all.

    e-coli infection and leaky gut

Thanks @Jonathan Edwards . I'm not taking it as medical advice, more confirmation that my reasoning is not utterly foolish, and, as you say, giving me advice in terms of my rights. I know I am entitled to a printout of my blood results: I have a geeky interest in understanding them, and my GP...

    e-coli infection and leaky gut

Thanks @Trish, @NelliePledge and @Jonathan Edwards . It's nice to know that I am not going insane. I kept asking about my blood results, and each doctor would promise to find out, then I'd not see them again. I do know that my CRP at one time prior to discharge was around 30! I did ask for a...

    e-coli infection and leaky gut

Back again, after a fifth trip in to hospital. I just can't get my head around their logic. They don't like prescribing antibiotics for a longer spell, so instead I have had antibiotics for about 8 weeks now in total, but in 5 short spells, each leaving a gap when the infection returns. To my...
