New book: 'Breaking Free' (PASC: ME and Covid-19)

It sounds to me very like the Lightning Process, Gupta, Optimum Heath and all those other mind body programs. Not an ounce of evidence for any of it, and lots of anecdotal reports of harm.

I think there needs to be a really good thorough study of people undergoing these practices, carried out by scientists with no conflicts of interest, and including things like before and after 2 day CPET, activity tracking over at least a couple of years, and cognitive testing. I think ethically it would have to be done with volunteers who understand the risks.

Totally agree…..What a load of cobblers….sounds like LP/Gupta repackaged. In NZ known as Switch Therapy.

The journalist has an interesting interpretation of the NICE guidelines after being “enlightened” by Jan :bored:

[According to NICE guidelines, both Long Covid and CFS are ‘maladaptive neurological conditions’. This means there is no actual neurological (nerve) damage but the body’s adaptive system is malfunctioning nonetheless./QUOTE]

JAN’s TOP TIPS if you have Long Covid and/or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome:
1: Know you can recover, just like thousands of other people. Unless you have been diagnosed as having permanent damage to organs, know there is no physical damage and your body will rebalance.

2: Let go of setbacks. When you notice symptoms or setbacks, simply become mindful and fascinated. Become an objective observer, noticing from a distance all these sensations going on (the reptile brain kicking in) and try to remain emotionally detached from anything that isn’t useful. Everything will pass when you let it go.

3: Notice the good signs. Become brilliant at noticing any green shoots of recovery, no matter how tiny, such as making a cup of tea, walking one step further, or that your body feels settled. Make the brain register that you ARE safe and capable, even when just ticking over.

4: Consistently practise being fearless, confident, joyful and calm, even if you only took one step. Be excited and uplifted. Never push through or do things feeling concerned, looking for threats, as this will just arouse your unhelpful chimp brain.

5: Practise the traffic lights procedure, using your gestures, posture, tone of voice and expression to: STOP the instinctive response and engage the higher brain to THINK you are safe, take control and then GO …

6: Do healthy exercises such as breathing exercises, gargle, sing, chant, meditate, swim, move, laugh, shake it out. Visualise yourself doing that anytime.

What a load of sh*t!! If that is all that it took to recover, none of us would still have ME. We would have been cured years, if not decades, ago.

from the article
This sickness loop only stops when the body detects it is safe to heal.
yeah, because of course the body doesnt heal from infections or wounds when its unsafe, such as in POW camps, or long term imprisonment or long term abuse, or any of the umpteen other massively dangerous situations people find themselves in where they and their bodies are in desperate danger. Nobody would ever survive any of those things, indeed the human race would have died out millions of years ago, longer even, before it even evolved, if safety were necessary for physical healing. What utter, utter drivel

These people forget that we stay ill for decades. In my life I have had times of profound grief and overwhelming joy; I have been stressed at times and been relaxed and happy at others. Through all this my ME has been affected only by how much I have had to do, with it being the same sitting in my wheelchair at my mother's grave and sitting holding my grandchild for the first time.
