The only values they cite are p values for "increasing values". It can't apply to actual values because of the "V" shape you mention.
Yes, I had thought there was a way of reading that differently. The actual values are of course given graphically, but it does look very much as if the writer is unaware that p values cannot be used to show a correlation. It is a basic mistake people do make from time to time!
