Abstract
Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia are relatively common clinical syndromes. There are diagnostic criteria for each condition, though fatigue and chronic pain are frequent in both conditions, suggesting possible overlap in their etiopathogenesis. The cause of these conditions remains unknown, and specific, highly successful therapies are not available. Indeed, the heterogeneity of these conditions suggest that the causes are likely multifactorial, and many theories have been offered, mainly involving infectious agents and psychological factors. Some evidence suggests that these disorders may represent disorders of the stress system, comprising the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system.

Why is it so interesting to show FM and ME - or FM and CFS? - are similar or not? My impression up til now was that it is agreed both are different - that's why I wonder. I don't understand it. Is this a MUS thing? Like "look, they are similar in fact"?

The same abstract was used for the 2004 version by a different author: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B0124755704002882

This is the summary of changes they provided:

Change History: November 2016. E Boorman, C Pariante and A Russell updated the text and further readings as related to the entire article. Table 1 was updated to include further evidence not already covered by existing headings (dexamethasone hyper-suppression; reduced ACTH response to awakening; reduced ACTH response to 5-HT).
