To summarise and answer the main question posed in our review, many studies have been performed in patients with HSV and VZV encephalitis. HSV, more than VZV encephalitis, is associated with high mortality and long-term sequelae despite available therapy, and complete remission – at least for up to 3 years – is expected in fewer than half of patients.
For further studies it is crucial to standardise inclusion criteria according to the case definitions (13) and use standardised outcome measures to allow comparability. Studies with longer follow-up periods and evaluation of functional impact of persisting sequelae on activities of daily life are also needed.
