In an article discussing whether to excercise while ill (generally not; it won’t help, will infect others, and sometimes make you worse, the article advises, but says Mayo Clinic says it’s ok to expose your gym to a head cold—let’s hope there’s no one there with leukemia or on anti rejection medication),

One study from the 1990s published in the journal Sports Medicine, Training and Rehabilitation found evidence suggesting exercising with the flu could noticeably increase your odds of developing a type of chronic fatigue syndrome that could last for years.

Viral infections like the flu also put added stress on your body, which can affect your blood pressure, heart rate, and overall heart function. That can raise your odds of having a heart attack or stroke.

If I get the flu or even a heavy cold I'll stay at home. And if I do venture out I'd prefer not to meet people with colds and flu. It might not have made much difference to me when I was 25, but now I'm getting long in the tooth I'd rather avoid the sufferers if at all possible.
