Case Report: Overlap Between Long COVID and Functional Neurological Disorders, 2022, Gilio et al

I had all those symptoms, although my arm weakness affected both arms. In my case it was caused by very severe iron deficiency, and probably hypovolaemia too since I had a pronounced GI bleed at the time.

Lessons from Long COVID: working with patients to design better research, 2022, Nisreen A. Alwan

I took a quick look at some of the references for that Nature article and found they were worth checking out, if anyone is interested.

News about Long Covid including its relationship to ME/CFS 2020 to 2021

I had fairly severe Covid in November. My senses of smell and taste have come back slightly and I've probably got back about 20% of what they were. Food has little taste and I still dislike what used to be my favourite brand of tea. Nothing would persuade me to discuss this with a doctor. What...

Differences Between Women and Men .. in the Rate of Diagnosed Diseases After a Diagnostic Intervention is Conducted ... , 2022, Rosmalen et al

Healthy people will lose very small amounts of iron in their faeces. But anyone with IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) or IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) might lose more. Gastritis or stomach ulcers could increase the amount of blood lost. Polyps in the colon might bleed all the time or...

Differences Between Women and Men .. in the Rate of Diagnosed Diseases After a Diagnostic Intervention is Conducted ... , 2022, Rosmalen et al

I don't think so. The doctor would have chosen to add ferritin to any test request, although the lab may have chosen to do ferritin if some of his results from a Full Blood Count were "dodgy".

Differences Between Women and Men .. in the Rate of Diagnosed Diseases After a Diagnostic Intervention is Conducted ... , 2022, Rosmalen et al

My understanding of iron/ferritin is simplistic. Ferritin is a measure of your iron stores. When iron in the blood is too low a healthy body should take what it needs from ferritin. When the blood has too much iron it should transfer it to ferritin. But it isn't quite as simple as that once...

He obviously hasn't read the NICE guidelines which say anything under 30 is evidence of iron deficiency. See post #2 above.

Inappropriate sinus tachycardia in long-COVID and other updates on recent autonomic research, 2022, Miglis et al

I have always assumed they are different, but then I am not reliable on this subject and anything I say should be checked. My understanding of sinus tachycardia, that I was told by some doctor, but can't remember who or in what context : If a healthy and fit person with a normal heart rate at...

Inappropriate sinus tachycardia in long-COVID and other updates on recent autonomic research, 2022, Miglis et al

I suffer from intermittent "inappropriate sinus tachycardia" although I've never heard it called that, and it was put down to anxiety (naturally - doctors are very consistent in some scenarios). In my case it turned out to be caused by severe iron deficiency which I had to deal with myself. Once...

Effect of Mg Supplementation on Inflammatory Parameters: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials, 2022, Nicola Veronese

You have my sympathies. [rhetorical question] I wonder what the connection is between breast/nipple pain while breastfeeding and epsom salts. Is it an old wives tale or is it grounded in proper research? And did it fix what it was intended to fix? I took epsom salts all those decades ago in the...

Effect of Mg Supplementation on Inflammatory Parameters: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials, 2022, Nicola Veronese

Many, many years ago (early teens) I thought I was suffering from constipation. I don't know how I found out but I learned that epsom salts was a laxative, and I found some in the house. I don't know what it's purpose was but I took some in water. I would recommend never, never, never taking...

At the intersection of anger, chronic pain, and the brain: A mini-review, 2022, Yarns et al

If someone has been in pain for many years, that has been ignored, disbelieved and dismissed, of course they are likely to be angry! But anger is an emotion that is "disapproved of" particularly in women, which is why so many of them are fobbed off with pills to flatten emotions.

Effect of Mg Supplementation on Inflammatory Parameters: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials, 2022, Nicola Veronese

From the full paper - my emphasis : The use of "the majority" in the bolding above is misleading. It isn't a majority of the studies that used 250mg daily of Mg Oxide. It is a majority of the studies that used Mg Oxide that used 250mg daily. The types of supplement used in each of the 17...

GERD, acid reflux, heartburn and hiatus hernia

I have been tested for SIBO. I found one apparent absurdity that I still don't understand. From this link : https://www.verywellhealth.com/how-to-get-tested-for-sibo-4125868 When I was tested the only thing they checked for was hydrogen. I thought they would test for methane too. There may be...

Functional seizures: The patient’s perspective of a diagnostic and treatment odyssey, 2022, Andrini et al

I don't blame this poor woman for terminating treatment. Apart from anything else, the patient appears to live in the USA. So she is paying for all this failed and useless treatment. I wonder if they actually did much in the way of biological testing. I was rather shocked to see that they...
