San Francisco Chronicle (opinion): Biden says the COVID pandemic is over. He could have fooled me

Of the 425-450 US people dying per day, half are vaccinated. Dr. Griffin (latest microbe TV podcast 9/18/22) said that if Paxlovid (which he says is given out by doctors to only 1.5% of the eligible in the US) were given to these vaccinated symptomatic patients (200 or so per day), the death...

San Francisco Chronicle (opinion): Biden says the COVID pandemic is over. He could have fooled me

In Dr. Daniel Griffin's podcast this week (he's on microbe TV), he gave his opinion that declaring the pandemic over was way too US-centric, that millions globally lack vaccines and immuno-modulating drugs (like Paxlovid) to treat more serious cases.

Noise cancelling headphones! Oh Joy! (and other ways to block sound)

@mango, can you rate the Loop Quiet ear plugs for me? How do they compare to using foam-type, cheap ear plugs and wearing Bose noise cancelling headphones in addition, over the ears with the foam plugs in place. My aim is to be deaf to sound.

Treatment for that searing muscle pain?

As you can see from the posts, everyone reacts differently. I use capsaisin because it has been shown to have effectiveness in knee pain (osteoarthritis) and also it does dampen my pain in different areas and works quite quickly. It's not as effective as a drug for severe pain, but moderate...

New York declares 'state of emergency' as polio continues to spread

TWIV has had some great podcasts about this subject. Vincent Rancaniello Phd has done research with polio. https://www.microbe.tv/twiv/twiv-931/ It's about oral polio vaccination in other parts of the world. Oral polio vaccine causes some cases of polio in other countries and that's what...

Treatment for that searing muscle pain?

I have fibro pain which is searing, or rather like Thor up there twisting my muscles into a knot as hard as he can. Or like pulled muscles everywhere. I use every day: microwave heat sac, heating pad capsaicin cream (0.1%) 3 applications a day, trying not to get it into eyes, or other mucus...

Vitamin K levels in Fibromyalgia Syndrome Patients and Their Associations with Pain, Disease Activity, QoL & Inflammatory Cytokines, 2022, Çıracıoğlu

This study reminds me of one done years ago by a grad student. And what was the magic ingredient interrogated? Cherry juice.

Symptoms in women with fibromyalgia after performing physical activity: the role of pain catastrophizing and disease impact, 2022, López-Gómez et al

This group in a university psychology department in Spain do a lot of studies about FM and walking and pain and castastrophizing and why won't patients just follow our prescription of walkikng. From now on, when I read the word "catrastrophizing," I know that it's an objective state where...

Effect of vitamin B12 on the symptom severity and psychological profile of fibromyalgia patients; a prospective pre-post study, 2022, Gharibpoor et al

Yup, no control group and a massive amount of placebo effect. Which is when it is "open-label." You know what you are taking, it's on the bottle and you can look it up on the internet. Doesn't lead to any expectation of getting massively better or cured! now would it. This isn't research.

The utter stupidity of questionnaires as tools for diagnosis. A lighthearted look at some questionnaires misused in ME/CFS research

With my FM pain and shall I dare say fatigue, ataxia (weirdo walking when suddenly overwhelmed by being outside), dizzyness, etc. etc. and questionnaires: The professional reason behind a questionnaire is to screen for concurrent or pre-existing depression that is supposed to worsen existing...

A comparison of pain, fatigue, and function between post–COVID-19 condition, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome: a survey study, 2022, Haider

Clinical phenotypes (what shows to the eye) aren't that similar in ME and FM. Rather, the term clinical phenotypes is meaningless here. Shows the lack of knowledge of the researchers.

Telerehabilitation proposal of mind-body technique for physical and psychological outcomes in patients with fibromyalgia, 2022, Teresa Paolucci et al

This is a proposal so no control group. Seems everyone's pet PT technique thrown at the n=28 FM patients with only a numeric rating of pain at >3 (0-10 scale). That isn't the norm in studies; most require a 6 for pain on a 0-10 scale. Invasive or useful, is the use of color as an 'emotional...

Physical therapists have a lot to learn about post-viral fatigue in the wake of a “tsunami” of long COVID patients

Heath professionals are supposed to have "objective measurements" to show the effectiveness of their interventions. Thus, a starting point, or "baseline" howver useless. Part of the push for "evidence based" I suppose. In studies about the effectiveness of pain meds for FM, for instance, I...

New 'cure' for LC, ME etc? Daily Mail article on 'Microcurrent therapy' - Arc4health

If it sounds too good to be true, it's most probably marketing or fraudulent claims. There are many testimonials by horse owners on the equine branch of the company making the micro stim product. I dislike testimonials in place of evidence so much I could take a hatchet to them (not the...

New 'cure' for LC, ME etc? Daily Mail article on 'Microcurrent therapy' - Arc4health

Maybe there's something to this or maybe it's post hoc ergo propter hoc (after this, therefore because of this). Which means that the spontaneous improvements in long covid symptoms happened and would have happened without use of the device. I would need to know what the course of improvements...

New 'cure' for LC, ME etc? Daily Mail article on 'Microcurrent therapy' - Arc4health

Pretty sure it's quack-o-rama. Used to jumpstart muscles in physical therapy treatment of knee arthritis and not proven efficacy for that, I think. Gives the muscles a twitch. Nothing earthshattering. No message from the divine.

GP chief warns WFH (working from home) could have a profound impact on Britain's mental health: Clare Gerada

There are some people who are indeed isolated working from home and would do better with getting back to a social (office) setting. Most kids, but not all, also. However, that leaves out several cohorts (? the percentages) of people who need the flexibility of working from home or remotely from...

AI Could Help Patients With Chronic Pain Avoid Opioids

CBT is pretty simplistic. Either you are rationalizing, generalizing, catastrophizing, doing black or white thinking, etc. etc. Aren't there about 10-12 principles of CBT? If AI can parse your responses (which I am pretty sure it can), then spitting out the correct CBT principle to 'correct'...

AI Could Help Patients With Chronic Pain Avoid Opioids

Perhaps AI could be an improvement over the average CBT technician or practitioner. But more germaine is the development of new drugs for chronic pain. Ones that are at least 60% effective and don't cause constipation or upset the addiction community.
