I think that quote can be unclear for people when presented like on the Health Rising site. In context, Wessely is just talking about ME as a diagnosis, not the symptoms which can lead to patients being diagnosed with ME. It's not about patients' symptoms being 'all in the mind', or simply a...
I'd agree with 'compelling', and I certainly think it's worth pointing people to its findings, but I think it's worth being a bit cautious with this whole area. Also, the Tribunal was only a relatively short process... it seems like Matthees did a great job informing the judge of what was going...
I think that's actually being a bit unfair on him. Wessely often writes in such an evasive way that it can be difficult to summarise what he thinks, so I think it's probably best to try to rely on direct quotes.
@maxwhd from twitter made this summary of that issue:
Also, I'm not sure that...
I wonder if we'll see these results published in a journal. My guess is that we'd be more likely to if there was a more impressive positive effect to sell.
That piece from the editor was pretty frustrating. It also shows the way in which anything which presents the controversies around CFS as some 'psych vs bio' debate makes it harder to get people to focus on the real problems with the poor quality of key psych research, like PACE. Most people...
They don't seem to feel a responsibility to engage critically with psychosocial CFS research.
Here's their SMILE 'analysis', where they fail to mention the problems with the trial falsely claiming to be prospectively registered, when really it swapped primary outcomes after half the...
We don't know if Sharpe was genuinely stalked by a woman, or if that 'stalking' entailed anything criminal, rather than just (for example) attending public lectures and asking difficult questions.
I'm not sure you'll find a quote of him saying ME/CFS is "all in the mind": "They say we are...
You're right that we don't know, and the context is important, but whenever we hear more context for the threats and harassment that they complain of, the more it seems that they have been spinning things to make it seem worse than it is.
I certainly think it would be a mistake for anyone to...
It said death threats against researchers were common, presented that PACE recovery paper as 'ground-breaking' for showing CBT and GET provided the best hope for patients, leaves White to present FOI requests as a form of harassment, etc, etc... I'd say it's a propaganda piece.
The only 'death...
Seeing as that article was trying to make 'activists' sound as scary as possible, my guess would be that the police had little interest in this 'militancy', and instead the list was just drawn up by researchers who mistake criticism for 'abuse' and then provided to some uninterested officer.
Maybe your request wouldn't be entirely clear to someone who had no understanding of the context?
I suspect that there would be exemptions for the release of a list of names like this anyway, as presumably it would count as personal information for people whose names were listed. An alternative...
I'm not sure if people can complain directly to COPE, or if it's a forum for journal editors to take complaints. With Tuller, the journal were able to misrepresent the case in their submission to COPE.
PS: Sorry, I meant to link to Tuller's most recent blog following the COPE saga in my above...
Over 18k... I know that in the grand scheme of things it's still not a lot, but it's also fun watching how these alternative networks can allow information to spread without the approval of the UK Establishment.
