The uses and abuses of Psychoneuroimmunology: A global overview 2005 Nicholas Cohen

I misread the thread title as "psychonumerology" and only registered mild surprise.

UK Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) project - draft website goes live, feedback sought on recruitment plan, and updates

Victoria Derbyshire has always been very good to us. EDIT: And that other guy on the radio, can't remember his name.

Genome-wide analysis identifies molecular systems and 149 genetic loci associated with income, 2019, Hill et al

I agree that talk of genes should not be shut out by political correctness. But it should be taken with a very cautious pinch of salt when being applied to a concept like "intelligence", which we are fairly rubbish at defining and measuring (fill in this questionnaire, we'll turn it into a...

Trial By Error: Professor Jonathan Edwards’ View of ME (includes discussion of exercise and long-term harm)

I don't see why. All you have to do is pass us some questionnaires, get us to assign numerical values to how much harm exercise causes us, and there's your evidence. For the giggling psychologists to demand a higher standard of evidence than that would be pure hypocrisy.

Trial By Error: Professor Jonathan Edwards’ View of ME (includes discussion of exercise and long-term harm)

My wife used to get behind me and push when I was walking, especially if going up an incline or up the stairs. I've just realised that she hasn't done that for a long time, so I must be improving. I occasionally go for a short walk if I feel up to it, not for exercise, but because after a...

Surgeons withdraw support for heart disease advice

From the BBC website. This story contains a lot of familiar elements: https://www.bbc.com/news/health-50715156 If this kind of story becomes a thing, we've got the ultimate example for any journalist who's interested ...

Article: Oliver Vaughan-Jones Has Big Plans For Improvement to the Adaptive Ski Industry -Dec 2019

This is a better article: https://www.planetski.eu/news/12288 I wish him well, of course. It's the journalist of the first article that really annoyed me by finishing it with that inspirobabble paragraph at the end.

The Benefits of Oral Rehydration on Orthostatic Intolerance in Children with Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (2019) Marvin S Medow, et al

To tell us anything at all they should compare it with giving the children beer and crisps.

Blog: BMJ Opinion: Tessa Richards: Should patient advocates adopt guerilla tactics?

If it means turning up at a vet's in a gorilla suit I think it might be worth a shot, I'd probably get taken more seriously.

The science of craniocervical instability and other spinal issues and their possible connection with ME/CFS - discussion thread

I'm not sure looking at the number of lawsuits, or the number of won lawsuits, is that helpful. If we judged the BPS brigade on the number of lawsuits brought and won against them by dissatisfied patients, we'd all be queuing up for CBT and GET. The interesting thing about these reports of law...

Special Report - Online activists are silencing us, scientists say Reuters March 2019

Classy news outlet he's chosen to announce it in this time. If that's the only place he can get his resignation announcements published now I find it most encouraging. Next to a study showing that marijuana gives women better orgasms, and stories about a vicar getting caught having affairs with...

Pain in ME–what helps you and what can I do?

Your body is telling you to stop typing on your phone so much. I have the same, I get pain in my shoulder, neck and head when I've been using my laptop on the sofa too much. The only thing I can do is stop using my laptop on the sofa for a day or two. It's very frustrating and annoying, but I...

Nocebo and the contribution of psychosocial factors to the generation of pain, 2019, Benedetti et al

When I read the title I thought "generation of pain" was a label like "millenial generation", and wondered which generation they were about to brand for complaining too much about pain.

Abnormalities in the urine of people with ME/CFS? A clinician asks for feedback

Never noticed a difference with urine. Around and after onset 5-6 years ago my underarm sweat changed (very sudden strong-smelling bursts) but that seemed to resolved itself after a few months (thankfully, not good for the classroom). I mentioned it to my doctor at the time, he didn't say...
