Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) - articles, social media and discussion

In thyroid treatment, most people with hypothyroidism have primary hypothyroidism (about 90% allegedly) i.e. the problem is with the thyroid itself not producing sufficient thyroid hormones. There is also secondary hypothyroidism where the pituitary can't make sufficient TSH (Thyroid Stimulating...

Long COVID burden and risk factors in 10 UK longitudinal studies and electronic health records, 2022, Thompson et al

Sometimes I wish that gender wasn't collected about certain types of trials and research papers. I have a strong suspicion that gender is used to decide whether something is important or not. If something is mostly relevant to females then it isn't deemed important or urgent.

Getting it wrong most of the time? Comparing trialists’ choice of primary outcome with what patients and health professionals want, 2022, Treweek

I'm curious. What happens if trials are done that use an objective measure - and the objective measure is not a good indicator of how well the patient feels? In fact it is almost completely irrelevant to many patients. Something that happens in endocrinology is the use of the TSH to tell...

ME/CFS SKeptic: A new blog series on the dark history of psychosomatic medicine

From the blog post : In the worldview of a baby, the wish to be loved and cared for is closely associated with feeding. Therefore, the unresolved wishes of peptic ulcer patients to be nurtured, express themselves in a stomach that is constantly preparing for food. As result, these patients...

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) - articles, social media and discussion

So, someone with adhesions (like me) that prevents my bowel moving normally, that can distort and crush muscles, nerves, veins and arteries, and can stick multiple organs together that should never be stuck together, is still told they have FND which, as we know, is treated with CBT? Can I be a...

What kind of trauma? I bet they mean mental or psychological trauma rather than physical trauma.

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) - articles, social media and discussion

Given the authors (who include Alan Carson and Jon Stone) I haven't actually read this : A practical review of functional neurological disorder (FND) for the general physician

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) - articles, social media and discussion

I was diagnosed with "Functional Bowel Disorder" back in the 1990s. In the early 2000s I had surgery on adhesions from delayed and botched surgery done when I was 13 (about 30 years before). The "Functional Bowel Disorder" was about 95% cured, which is amazing since I didn't get any CBT to cure...

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) - articles, social media and discussion

Do Stone and Sharpe really believe that patients are too stupid to read about the history and derivation of the name FND? It's no more acceptable to me personally than conversion disorder, neurasthenia, hysteria and somatic symptom disorder. There are probably a few other names I would rather...

    News from Doctors with ME

I remember something my local hospital used to do (and might still do for all I know). They would send out letters that gave the time of an appointment, say 10.30am. Then there would be lots of words about whatever you could expect to happen in the appointment. Then two-thirds of the way through...

The Impact of Iron Dyshomeostasis and Anaemia on Long-Term Pulmonary Recovery and Persisting Symptom Burden after COVID-19..., 2022, Sonnweber et al

I would suggest that these problems are very common after any illness or accident or surgery, not just Covid-19. The worse the person's original health problem the worse the iron problems will be and the longer they are likely to last.

UK: Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) articles, blogs and discussion

I don't know. But I think common gynaecology issues (endometriosis, fibroids, PCOS, ovarian cysts etc) are gradually being moved into IAPT and MUS as well. Doctors never want to test and/or diagnose women's issues because women are all hysterical aren't they, and they just need a pat on the head...

Would you agree that acceptance leads to being able to achieve more?

Should I stop trying to get help for invisible problems? Should I accept that people in the NHS will always be rude to me? That I will get eyes rolled at me? That doctors will sit in surgeries doing an imitation of a brick wall while I try and say something that will get through their armour...

High-dose Oral Thiamine Vs Placebo for Chronic Fatigue in Patients With Quiescent Inflammatory Bowel Disease, 2021, Bager et al

I find it rather strange that almost everyone with a website who recommends thiamine is taking 100s of mg of thiamine. The recommended daily intake is 1.2mg per day. I've taken 100mg thiamine per day in the past but was nervous of taking more. I've also tried benfotiamine (a fat soluble form of...

Feeling like I'm starving, or continuing to feel hungry despite a full stomach

I have read that older people need to eat more protein than younger people. I just googled "protein intake elderly" and found lots of links. I wonder if higher protein intake is also required in sick people - if they can eat it without feeling worse.
