I doubt it has occurred because from his point of view he is right and we are wrong, so if he is right then he is the hero pushing through the hordes of misguided and deluded patients. He probably even believes that someday history will prove him right.

I completely agree but when faced with a powerful adversary strategy becomes very important if we desire victory. The squeaky wheel does get the grease but even today instead of grease we often get thrown under the bus.
