Prevalence of symptom exaggeration among North American independent medical evaluation examinees: systematic review ..., 2025, Darzi, Guyatt, Busse +

I have yet to read the study, but the abstract suggests that these people may have a very loose grasp of mathematics. Putting aside the 'low certainty of evidence' for a moment, they found that studies where more than 40% of the participants were women were associated with higher rates of...

Natural Mental Health Therapies: How Kambo Is Being Used to Treat Chronic Fatigue and Stress

It's promoting a 'therapy' where a person is burned, the slime of a frog is applied to the wound, and then the person sweats, vomits and risks life-threatening complications. Luxury, refinement and elegance.

Prevalence of symptom exaggeration among North American independent medical evaluation examinees: systematic review ..., 2025, Darzi, Guyatt, Busse +

Thanks for finding this @Mij. I think it's important in our understanding of what is happening in Cochrane.

Prevalence of symptom exaggeration among North American independent medical evaluation examinees: systematic review ..., 2025, Darzi, Guyatt, Busse +

Wow. That is really prejudice laid bare. If we were in any doubt about what we are dealing with here, this dispels it. Information about the three senior authors here: Gordon Guyatt, Jason Busse, both from McMaster University, both associated with "evidence-based medicine" and Cochrane...

Natural Mental Health Therapies: How Kambo Is Being Used to Treat Chronic Fatigue and Stress

Kambo: Natural drug or potential toxic agent? A literature review of acute poisoning cases, 2022 That article that @SlySaint found is on a website called Opulence, with a tagline 'the best of everything'. Incredible.

Natural Mental Health Therapies: How Kambo Is Being Used to Treat Chronic Fatigue and Stress

While I'm keen on any traditional remedies that may have been used for ME/CFS-type illnesses being identified and evaluated, there's nothing there in that article that is at all convincing about Kambo helping beyond a temporary effect, maybe resulting from these painkilling molecules. There's...

Trial Report Awe reduces depressive symptoms and improves well-being in a randomized-controlled clinical trial, 2025, Lopez et al

Yes, the trick with all these therapies is to rebrand frequently, so the complaints about the previous brand don't stick. Besides, AWE is a whole lot easier to use for an acronym than MINDFULNESS.

Trial Report Awe reduces depressive symptoms and improves well-being in a randomized-controlled clinical trial, 2025, Lopez et al

Attention: full and undivided attention on things you appreciate, value, or find amazing. I gave this paper my full undivided attention. I find it amazing that this trial was funded and published. Wait: slow down, pause. I went away and had breakfast, gave my undivided attention to my toast...

Trial Report Awe reduces depressive symptoms and improves well-being in a randomized-controlled clinical trial, 2025, Lopez et al

I can't see any facility to comment on the paper in the journal. Is there one? Nature is throwing away its good reputation on stuff like this. I only found this:

Trial Report Awe reduces depressive symptoms and improves well-being in a randomized-controlled clinical trial, 2025, Lopez et al

Participants were told that they would either start immediately or more than four weeks later. The intervention group started immediately. The control group started around a month later. So, the researchers used the BPS strategy of treating the controls, making followup control vs intervention...

Functional characterisation of CD8+ T cells mobilised with acute supramaximal high-intensity interval exercise [...], 2025, Strömberg et al

It makes sense that the body would react to substantial exertion by sending signals to now rest. And it is sounding as though those signals are sent through the blood. Audrey's study found that ME/CFS serum did not change the metabolism of muscle cells, but what if the missing ingredient was...

Effectiveness and tolerability of liraglutide as add-on treatment in patients with obesity and [...] migraine: A prospective pilot, 2025, Braca et al

Thanks @forestglip With the open label, it's possible that the participants had an incentive to report fewer headache days, so they could stay on the drug, nominally for the migraine control but primarily for the weight loss benefit. That seems likely if the drug would be subsidised as a...

    News from Australia

There's this article co-authored by Lisa Sanci and acknowledging a contribution by Lloyd. Both are leads on the OUTPOST study. It's remarkably okay: It just would be great to know that the researchers know what PEM is and are going to measure it in this study.

    News from Australia

Well, that's interesting. I was thinking, great, and about time, another Dubbo-type prospective study, and maybe we can finally get some decent data on the incidence of ME/CFS after Covid-19. But, I expect most members here know Andrew Lloyd, he's a notorious BPS proponent. One time he...

Sex differences and immune correlates of Long COVID development, persistence, and resolution, 2024, Hamlin et al.

From The role of the transcription factor Ets1 in lupus and other autoimmune diseases 2016: As early as 2000, polymorphisms in the 3′ UTR of the human ETS1 gene were associated with particular clinical phenotypes of lupus. As described in more detail in the sections below, a few years later...

How should biological researchers present their results about ME/CFS to the media - discussion thread.

I think we'd have to think about how a particular gene might have been linked to anxiety in other genetic studies. A patient turning up to the doctor with vague symptoms, fatigue, generalised pain, is going to have many doctors assuming they have a case of MUPS on their hands, and they have...

Comparing gene expression patterns in CFS and GWI using the Kerr ME/CFS Platform, 2011, Garcia, Kerr, Fletcher, Sol, Klimas

Posting this old abstract because it found ETS1 upregulated in both ME/CFS and GWI. I don't know what they were testing. It sounds as though this result confirms a finding by Jonathan Kerr in a 2008 paper. ETS1 was found last year to be upregulated in immune cells in Long Covid patients -...
