FITNET-NHS Esther Crawley - 5th protocol out now

Peer review . . . probably. Robust peer review . . . not at all. Or at least not in the particular genre of research that matters to people who have no diagnostic test for illness. That peer reviewing is more along the lines of a 'gentlemen's club'. ;)

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

Yes, I found that quote rather more revealing than perhaps it was meant to be. It puts me in mind of the Polio epidemic in children. That was terrifying. For parents, for children and for the medics who cared for them. I imagine that the idea that some other illness could happen along those...

BPS attempts at psychologizing Long Covid

The hypothesis that a mild upper respiratory tract infection - even if caused by a new virus - causes a chronic dementing illness in children is a sweeping, massive, frightening claim. It is unlikely to my mind, given what we know about mild upper respiratory tract infections … Of all of the...

Successful Psychological Strategies of Experienced Chronic Fatigue Patients: A Qualitative Study, 2021, Hall et al

So the first sentence the writers include both patients and their therapists. But in the very next line we see the real focus . . . concern for those poor therapists and the possible collapse into nihilism. What catches my attention is their determination to push through and find a way for...

News about Long Covid including its relationship to ME/CFS 2020 to 2021

I was going to listen to the panel discussion with Brian Hughes and others from the link provided in the blog -- Gez’s channel. While this may be excellent and I will still have a listen I see some of the other offerings on the channel include Ashok Gupta and other 'medical experts' offering...

PEM induced only by sensory/cognitive exertion - what does it indicate about the pathophysiology of ME?

Just throwing a thought out and wondering . . . I wonder about the possibility that the pain may be originating from the jaw area as muscles there tighten while trying to focus. And that pain radiates and is felt elsewhere with various neurological symptoms (buzzing numbness etc) Any thoughts?

BMJ: Chronic fatigue syndrome and Long Covid, moving beyond the controversy, 2021, Newman

Yes. I hadn't remembered that. But it's a very good point. A point I think that can be highlighted to demonstrate that they are all over the place in order to protect their turf. It doesn't matter what the question is or what the problem is their solution is the only thing that matters.

    NICE ME/CFS guideline - draft published for consultation - 10th November 2020

A very well reasoned argument from Brian Hughes in his article. I hope it gets wide distribution.

BMJ: Chronic fatigue syndrome and Long Covid, moving beyond the controversy, 2021, Newman

It would seem we're going to have to get a grip on exactly what is meant by 'individualised' therapy. If that's even possible since the people banging on about it may be speaking in vague terms. It would be good to understand if most other medical treatment can be considered to have an...

Effect of Dietary Coenzyme Q10 Plus NADH Supplementation on Fatigue Perception and Health-Related QoL in ... ME/CFS, 2021, Castro-Marrero et al.

The problem with higher doses is that for some people who have tried a lower dose of some supplements that lower dose is already seeming to be over stimulating. Perhaps a much higher dose has a paradoxical effect but I'm not sure how one can know this.

United Kingdom: News from BACME - British Association of Clinicians in ME/CFS

That BACME event is geared entirely around the well-being of certain health professionals careers. No doubt an excellent opportunity for them to help reinforce to each other how much they are needed and valued. I'd prefer a SACKME event.

Dissecting the nature of post-exertional malaise, Hartle et al, 2021

I can't remember what's been written here previously but has there been any discussion about PEM being Orthostatic Intolerance?

Cognitive deficits in people who have recovered from COVID-19, 2021, Hampshire et al

I have a wish that there was a more nuanced understanding of the various types of cognitive functioning in order to better understand which parts are likely most affected.

Bias due to a lack of blinding: a discussion

Not to mention that by choosing to study and then research psychology there is already a self-selection bias. People who are not interested don't apply. As with any area of life there will be a few who are naturally curious and open-minded. As well as a few more who might have done had they...

Community-based primary care management of “long COVID”: A center of excellence model at NYC Health + Hospitals, 2021, List and Long

Agreed. So far in the history of ME "evidence based" has an absolute meaning of we are the evidence of their conceptual model. "Patient centered" has meant that we are some colony of their paternalistic whim. They will whip us into real people if it kills us.

    News from Canada

The way I read this is that Vancouver has ONE of the three clinics. I believe that the clinic is the one discussed some time ago that Alison Bested was tapped to run and then she quit because of the BPS influence there. I think Nacul is there now but I'm not sure it;s the same clinic for sure...
